Here is a 10 day free trial of a software recovery program that can be burned to a disk. You would then boot from that disk with your external drive plugged in, and after it loads the software, tell it to find all available files. When you find your files, copy them to your regular hard drive and reformat the external. Copy the files back to your external drive. Hope that helps some.

Was it a mac or pc machine you removed this device from? unplugging the usb storage device from the machine while powered can cause some form of corruption or worse head fault.

Don't format the drive, otherwise it'll wipe your data, data will still be recovered but it may cause some corruption as well if you do format it before recovering data.

You can use freeware recovery software for this. Download recuva and install in your machine. or Disk Drill for mac.

Once you've installed these software, plug in the external drive and let the machine recognize it. Once recognized fire up the recovery software you just installed and choose the correct device on the list. The software is pretty easy to use and you should find your way through it easily.

hope this helps.

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

Hi. My computer says I ejected my WD My Passport external drive but it was not properly ejected. How can I fix this. I need all my thesis files but computer can read the external drive! Help please!

Try to test your WD Ext HDD to a different computer and check if you will get the same problem.

If the same problem persist try to use a different cable for your WD Ext HDD.

If still fails kindly ask the store where you bought the WD Ext HDD on how to retrieve your files and have WD EXT HDD replaced?

If your WD Ext HDD works to a different computer then update the BIOS and Chipset of the computer where your WD Ext HDD connected previously.

Hope this helps.

WD Passport 250GB External cannot be recognized.

Go to BIOS (Press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS). Check if the Power state is in S1. Ensure that USB setting is in Hi-Speed.
Restart the computer and try using the device. this should fix. Let us know the result.

WD Passport Essential 160gb with PowerBook G4

The problem is that your powerbook G4 does not provide enough power to your 160gb passport HD. This does not happens to the new Macs with intel inside.
There are several ways to fix it:
1) Go to West Digital Website and buy a "Power Buster Cable USB" (that connect your 2 USB ports to your passport HD in order to provide more power). I think that it costs 10$. This is the link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/accessories.asp?ProdID=170
2) The other solution is easier. If you have an external USB hard drive with two USB ports, or a DVD/CD burner with two usb ports, you can pug your passport in one of the ports while the other HD or DVD/CD burner is connected to you PowerBook. You will be able to see and use your q60gb Passport HD.

My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive. I used just few days ago and connected the usb cable to my computer and the WD Passport drive and not recognized on my 2 laptop and 2 other...

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

I had a similar problem with my WD passport 320GB. When I connected it to my laptop it never showed up on My Computer even though the blue light on the hard drive came on.
Here is what I did:  Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Manage" and then "Disk Management",. you should see your WD hard drive listed. then click on "change driver letters and paths"  and change it from the listed to another drive. I changed mine from G to F drive and it worked for me.
