How can I find out what the Energy Rating is on my Reliance 501 w/h?

Reliance is AO Smith company.

1) Reliance does not post the 501 manual any more and I've written and asked for that manual, and they sent generic manual. Model 501 is both gas and electric.

2) That tells me the old energy factor is probably lower than .54 approximately, but it will be even less because energy factors are for new water heaters in perfect operating order under ideal conditions.

3) Energy factor is a measure of how efficiently the water heater turns energy BTUs into hot water.
Gas water heaters have higher energy factor because gas burner has more BTU punch than electric element, and can heat water faster.

4) However, energy factor is not measure of actual cost. It is merely a way to compare giant water heaters with smaller heaters, and gas with electric, without considering cost of heater, installation cost, repair costs, parts costs, life expectation of unit, disposal/recycling cost, or replacement cost.

5) You can improve your true energy factor by buying small cheap heater and maintaining it yourself so it lasts many years beyond manufacturer's warranty.

6) If someone buys a bigger water heater because it has better energy factor, it will not pay back the higher purchase cost. Same size to same size, the difference with higher energy factor is a few dollars per year.

7) If you have sediment inside of tank, the energy factor is out the window.

Reliance 501 electric water heater

Reliance-Rheem may have changed away from generic parts so you have to buy special order parts from them.
I have not heard of this before for elements... but Rheem does that for other parts.
Avoid Rheem products.
Rheem also makes a 1-3/4" element to fit Marathon water heaters, instead of standard 1-1/2"
Actual thread size for standard water heater is same as 1" pipe, except straight thread instead tapered pipe thread.
See if 1" pipe will thread into water heater element opening.

I need to know if i have the right element for my water heater. i have the reliance 501 4500w/240v id # 5 40 2ort0 w i want to know if i need the long 1 or the bent 1. would love a pic if possible. i...

Either element will work ... straight or bent.
4500 Watt element will work, buy you can also substitute 3500, or 1500 Watt.
Stepping up wattage larger than water heater nameplate is not recommended, because wiring may not carry more watts.

Element wattage is printed on end of each element.

Reliance 501 manual is not available on Reliance site.
The 501 used to be standard model, but now it's the 600 series.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/prod/elec.html

600 series manual is similar to your product.
page 22 shows element replacement, and says not to use greater wattage than rating plate on water heater.

Age of Reliance heater is on serial number. First character is letter. Next two characters are numbers corresponding to year. So C05222,,, serial number is made in 2005.

I have a reliance 501 gas hot water tank and i bought it in 1988 and it now has a leak at the bottom so i am going to have to replace it. but i never had any trouble with it until now so it lasted a long...

hot water heaters typically don't last most then 20 years or so. AO Smith used to sell glass lines tanks that lasted longer, but were fragile. Areas with acidic water, like the west coast, tend to go quicker.
The new tankless heaters cost more, but don't waste energy heating up water over night.
A large house may need more than one tankless however, because you don't want temperature variation when someone is taking a shower and someone else wants to do laundry or dishes.

I have reliance 501 electric hot water heater, and currently have no hot water. Can't locate owners manual. What could be causing the problem.

There is an address near the end of this link to request manuals of reliance water heaters not listed. http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om.html
it is quite possible that your heater works on the same principle as one of the other models and just differs in capacity or power rating.

Need to empty reliance 501 hot water heater how?

1) Shut the breaker off to it at the panel. 2) Hook a hose up to it (the bottom has a drain). 3) Close the valve to the water heater (on the cold water supply). 4) Open drain on the bottom of water heater. 5) Open the relief valve to allow air into the tank (it won't drain otherwise - think if you put your finger on one end of a straw - the liquid stays in until you let go). Why are you draining it by the way?
