My daughters car -- 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue -- is giving us fits. It started shaking at highway speeds (a very bad shake). Last Friday it was in for inspection and needed a tie rod on one side. It was replaced and the wheels aligned. The other tie rod was replaced less than a year ago. The mechanic did not notice this problem at all. We got the car back Friday night and it was fine. Saturday it started in again, shaking almost uncontrollably when she gets it to highway speed. Today my husband and daughter bought two new front tires and had them put on (the back tires are also excellent and less than a year old - no bulges, no signs of the belts coming out, etc.). He took the car for a ride and got it up to 80+. No shaking. My daughter took it awhile ago to meet up with some friends and about 4 miles past the house, it began shaking again at around 55 mph. We both have been reading online and can't come up with what it could be. The axles, rotors, suspension are fine. HELP PLS.

check that the leads are properly spaced and not touching each other. Check the condition of the distributor drive shaft bushes as they may be worn allowing the shaft to move around under the cap
The cause is too low an idle and engine is starving for fuel so it shakes like that.The thumping sound you hear is most likely just the exhaust being too close to the floor amd bumping against it when in drive with brake on.You said yourself that it stops when you put it in nuetral,well the engine speed goes up when there's no stress on it.With some one holding the brake and it's sitting there thumping,set the idle speed up just enough to make the engine stop rocking that way.
What your father is describing is called a c.v. joint short for constant velocity joint. A new driveshaft (containing both inner and outer c.v. joints) costs approximately 100.00 new and the labor is 1.0 hours. Now you say van is this not an oldsmobile intrigue? If not that diagnosis might not be correct
i would start with checking the axles because most of them have a abs ring on them which will trigger the abs light. also make sure your axles are in good shape. last resort would be that you need new tires because the steel bands inside are starting to seperate. good luck
