Seems to be a bad driver or damaged boot.
If the computer shuts down and restarts check CPU fan and blow dust out from heat sink, CPU may be overheating.
Otherwise, use the recovery disk to repair, or the installation CD and do the system repair. Or from repair disk, if your computer worked fine before, Restore To a Previous setting.

Are you trying to set up a raid configuration? If not I would reformat using the 98 disk and reinstall. (You may be able to skip installing 98, try installing xp first and it should ask for the disk containing the software (win98) that qualifies for the upgrade.

hi! there, set up exe. that was when your setting up win 98 you have to install that came from floppy disk before you can install win 98.there is an os win 98 in your system you have to delete that previous os before installing another win xp.restart ur computer. press F2 to open your bios set-up . then select bios set-up priority your cd-room drive second, your hard drive. last, quit and save set-up. and then your computer will restart. insert your cd windows xp then reinstall your window xp. delete the previous os then follow the set up on your window xp until you install your new window xp.

It sounds like maybe some malware got into your computer and messed up Win 98 really bad. If you have the OEM disc try and re-install the OS. But you will probably find that Win 98 will not have all the drivers for your computer. It always came up short in that department. And you will find very little on line support for Win 98. It's been obsolete for years. It sounds like this would be a good time to migrate to a more modern OS. Go online and Google Linux. You can get a number of Linux based operating systems for FREE! Ubuntu is supposed to be a good one. It may take a little time to learn to use it but I feel for the price it is worth the effort. Over the years it has become more user friendly. It has it's own applications and should have all the drivers for your hardware. It also is not vulnerable to all of the Windows malware that is out there. So for someone on a tight budget it seems like a good option. While this is not a solution to your immediate problem it is something to consider.

My computer keeps restarting

do you see an error message at some point?
describe in which part specifically your computer restart?
what were you doing last before the computer started acting up on you?

it may be a driver problem:
have you tried to restart in safe mode?.. after the post sequence press f8 and start the computer in safemode. there are other options you may want to try from the advance startup menu that comes up when pressing f8. if you are able to start the computer in safemode your problem most likely is with a driver.

did you install new hardware?
try uninstalling the new hardware and restart the computer to see if that solves the problem

you may have a problem with some configuration files or booting files...
try to restart your computer with a windows 98 boot disk. first download the disk from http://www.bootdisk.com/ and make a floppy disk as directed. then get into the cmos/bios of your computer and make sure your first booting device is your floppy drive, then put your newly made win 98 boot disk in the floppy drive and restart your computer. at the prompt type c: then enter then type win

Error message

hi have you tried switching computer off then back on if this dont solve problem then you need to when you switch computer on it will say press f 1 or f 3 or similar key to enter setup screen once in the setup option you will need to change the setting for startup it will probably say a:/ then c;/ you need to change this so that your c:/ drive is first once you have done this save settings then when you switch computer on it will boot up from c:/ drive and wont ask for disk.
Or on the screen that its on try pressing esc key and see if this will let you write anything as it sounds like you are in dos mode if so type c:/ then press enter then type run this should load up then as normal if dont accept this command try type exit or win if neither work type c:/ press enter screen should say c:/ type win or windows press enter the type run again let me know how you get on ok
