Thanks in advance for any help. When I punch in a number then 'talk' the readout says "connecting" then it says 'out of range'...which it is not. Can anybody help with this? I really need to get this phone working!
One idea is that the handset is not registered with the base unit. When the phone is new, you must register the handset with the base prior to use. Is this, by any chance, a second handset that you recently acquired? If so, you should be able to set it in the cradle for the base unit for a few seconds, and after that, it should be fine.

Check for dialing tone by pressing 'Talk On' phone button. If no tone, check cord at base station and the phone socket is correctly plugged in at both ends using the original cord supplied. If still no dial tone, check the phone at another phone connection to establish if either the phone or the line is faulty. Usually that works for a lot of devices, taking the battery out and waiting about 15-20 seconds. Out of range could mean one of two things, It might be telling you that the battery in the handset is low and not able to receive the signal or you have reached the limit for distance, or have crossed into a metal barrier. No power at the base could mean a lose connection at the main unit or wall plug in. It may be a good thing to relocate your base unit, if you can.
Usually the quickest way is to remove the battery from the device for 30 seconds and then reinsert. That will force the phone to scan what channel your base station is on and connect to the right channel.
When you are away, you call your number. After the answering machine asks you to leave a message, punch your code and listen to the instructions (hear new messages, hear all messages, erase message, de/activate answering function, etc.).
