Anti-tip bracket for Amana ACF422GAW

Do you know about the lawsuit whereby Sears is supposed to install anti-tip brackets for many of the ranges it sold. I have an Amana Big Oven model ACF422 GAW. Now the manufacturer no longer makes the anti-tip bracket so what is Sears supposed to do about this? There must be another anti-tip bracket that will work just fine. It has taken from May until August for me to find out that the part is no longer being manufactured by Whirlpool/Amana.

I happen to be a real estate agent and I know this was a real issue in a recent sale and the sellers had to jump through hoops to find something that worked. I wasn't involved in it so I don't know how they found one, but I do not want this issue when I go to sell. I appreciate any answers you can give on this "hot" topic--get it? A cooktop, stove, hot....

Screw in a piece of wood or metal that stickes out a little ways horizontally across the back of the stove. Screw another piece of wood or metal onto the wall a tad bit higher then the one on the stove. Now the stove can't tip over and it'll be easier to manuver into place.

Replacement of Whirlpool part 77001257 by 8203529 for Amana ARTC8600WW range...

Control switch for dual heating surface element in our Amana ARTC8600WW range (year 1999) failed and did not cycle power after the heating element was turned on. The range was in very good condition so we wanted to replace the switch. However, the original Amana part Y0315855 was not available. The company was taken over by Whirlpool and we found that Whirlpool part 77001257 should be used. But that part was not produced anymore either. On Best Buy web site we found information about an alternative 8203529 Whirlpool part. We order it, installed into the range, and got no action. From other web sites we quickly learned that the part is not the right replacement and that there is no replacement switch for our range at all. We hesitated to replace entire range so instead of returning the part to Best Buy we decided to investigate the differences between the original part and 8203529. Soon we began to believe that 8203529 should work. Specification as well as all connections were fine so we tried to adjust a little bit the tension of bimetallic element inside the switch. There is a tiny screw accessible for this purpose. The adjustment can be done be a 5/64 hex key which, for electrical safety, we insulated by a plastic tube. Immediately we got the expected action. We tested all settings before mechanical installation and all of them worked very well. The mechanical installation of the switch needed a makeshift bracket to distance the switch from the back of the panel wall in order to get the position of the switch knob properly leveled with the front wall of the panel. Just shortening the shaft of the switch was not sufficient. The bracket that comes with 8203529 was not suitable for our range. It was not difficult to make another bracket so we repaired the range without compromising its functionality or safety. That confirms that part 8203529 can be used in place of Whirlpool part 77001257.

Where and how to install anti tip bracket

The anti tip bracket is installed along the baseboard area BEHIND the range, so that one of the rear feet on the appliance will slide into it when pushed against the wall. Once installed, the rear foot of the range is slid into the bracket, holding the rear foot to the floor. This effectively prevents the range from tipping forward.

Installation instructions are included on page 3 of the Installation Manual that came with the appliance. If you no longer have a copy, you can obtain a replacement at Just enter your model number under their "Manuals" link and you will find it listed in .pdf (Adobe) format. You can download or print a copy for FREE. For your convenience, here's a direct link:

Figure 3 shows an excellent illustration of how the bracket is to be installed.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Need instructions on how to change the lifters in my 1998 Chevy S10 2.2L

Please don't forget to rate!!!!

2.2L Engine When installing new lifters, a pre-lube should always be applied to the lifter body. It is also a good idea to prime hydraulic lifters by submerging them in clean engine oil and depressing the plunger using an old pushrod. This allows the internal components of the hydraulic lifter to coat with oil before initial operation in the engine. All lifters should be replaced when a new camshaft is installed.
If any valve train components (lifters, pushrods, rocker arms) are to be reused, they must be tagged or arranged during removal to assure installation in their original locations.
  1. Remove the rocker arm cover.
  2. Remove the cylinder head assembly from the engine.
  3. Remove the bolts retaining the lifter anti-rotation brackets, then remove the brackets.
  4. Remove the hydraulic roller lifters from the bores.
  5. Inspect the lifter and lifter bore for wear and scuffing. Examine the roller for freedom of movement and/or flat spots on the roller surface.

Remove the bolts retaining the lifter anti-rotation brackets ...

... then remove the anti-rotation brackets

The lifters are located in bores in the engine block

Use a lifter removal tool to remove the lifters from the bore

To install:
If installing a new lifter, coat the lifter body with a suitable camshaft pre-lube
  1. Install each hydraulic lifter to its bore being careful to align the flat sides (top) of the lifters with the flat sides of the anti-rotation brackets. When properly installed the flat sides of each lifter are aligned parallel to the anti-rotation bracket. The roller at the bottom of the lifter is parallel to the camshaft lobe.
Make sure to properly align and install each lifter as improper installation of the lifters or brackets could result in engine damage.
  1. Install the anti-rotation bracket retaining bolts and tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  2. Install the cylinder head.
  3. Install the rocker arm cover.

Model 790 Glass Shatered

SEARS advised me 24AUG10 the screw per their Parts print is supposed to be 2 1/4 inches long. The reason our handles fall off is because the oven MFG installed many screws that were too short. Mine were 1 3/4 inches long. Keep in mind that this oven door is a sandwich, with the oven door glass trapped in there. There are compression spring brackets that when you screw the handle on, place pressure on the glass. If the screws are too short, you have to exert a lot of pressure just to get the treads to engage. When you tighten screws that are too short, excessive pressure is placed on the glass by those spring brackets. Many times the brackets actually bend. This is all due to the short screws that the mfg installed. To date, SEARS admits no accountablilty. I have sent them pictures of my 1 3/4 long screws the mfg installed! I explained to them in detail why the handles fall off and why the glass explodes. If they do not repsonde responsibly, then they are blatantly and purposely ignoring the issue. A Class action law suit may wake them up and also may be why the are dancing around this issue. Bad for us, but cheaper on them to wait to see if a suit is filed because this would be a huge recall.

Oven anti-tip bracket

Hi Jodie,

The anti-tip kits are installed on the floor behind the oven. They're installed BEFORE the oven is moved into place. They are "U"-shaped and when the oven is slid into place, the "U" locks into the back legs of the oven to lock it down.

You can tell if yours is so equipped by simply sliding the oven out away from the wall about 10 inches then looking behind it on the floor. Slide the oven out by opening the door about 5" and place your hands inside... then lift and pull toward you at the same time.

Here is the anti-tip kit for yours... If you see this down there, then you're good to go. If not, order both of those parts (in the previous link) 'cause you'll need them.

Hope this helps!
