Hi.
The tinge pink, often coming with kind of streaky shadows of blur means that you have a defective CCD sensor. The CCD sensor is the image sensor located directly behind the optics. The pink color is typical effect of this fault.
There were recalls issued for several models. I don't think the S220 was included in the recall, but give it a try calling the Nikon support number listed in the camera manual (Canon and Nikon stopped recalling and refunding for this problem in 1998).
Ask Nikon details on repair procedure. You can also get a quote from a third party repair here: Repair.
Regards.
Ginko
There is no way you can fix a defective CCD sensor with a setting change or a reset. The sensor is a matrix of pixel light detectors (photodiodes). The value of detected light is encoded row by row, and the pink color is typical of a defective encoding system inside the chip. Nikon told the truth and the camera must be repaired.
Your only hope is finding a cheaper repair that is still worth. Use this form and contact Advance Camera. They will give you a quote that is probably the minimum you can pay for this kind of repair: Repair.
Hi.
In Australia a quote on repair can be asked from Parramatta. I do not know about the prices. Usually third party offer better quotes respect manufacturer repair.

Nikon support have stated that as it is out of warranty it is uneconomical to repair. I was kind of hoping that you would be able to guide me with a setting change (even though I have done a reset already) or full factory reboot to resolve the issue.
The unit is 18 months old and too young to throw away/replace.
Checked out repairer you suggested. They are in Portland, Oregon. I am in Sydney, Australia.
Not sure if the logistics involved are practical.
