I turn on the 360 and the green light in the middle turns on but that's as far as it goes, doesn't read the 360 controller, no image and no sound. No other lights come on.

The flashing lights on the outside of the green power button are the status lights for any connected controllers. Just turn on one of your wireless controllers and the green status lights should come on. If you turn on a controller and it doesn't automatically connect, press the connect button the top of the controller and front of the Xbox at the same time. This should connect the controller.
Two red lights generally indicate hardware failure. Two green lights indicate two controllers are connected. Both green and red lights will not be lit at the same time. The green light in the middle indicates that the console is turned on. For more help deciphering red light flashing errors, see this guide HERE.
If you're using HDMI to connect, make sure the TV is on the correct input as the console will 'wait' for a valid signal before powering up fully (on some TV's).
Also check the colour of the Power Adapter when you have powered up the x360.
Here is a link to troubleshoot the power adapter based on the colour of the light on it:
clikc ont he button on ur xbox that looks like a bunch of arrows then turn on ur controller....this should solve it, if not e-mail me at [email protected]
I was having the same problem, and what seemed to fix mine was my hard drive. I keep my 360 on it's side and it [hard drive] was falling out a little. I pushed it back in and that seemed to do the trick. Also, when I fix my red rings, I just turn the console off, unhook EVERYTHING and leave it out for a minute. Then I hook everything back in (power cord, hdmi cable, ethernet cable, and hard drive) and it usually works out ok. I'm not saying that fixes everything, but, it has for me in the past.
