A flashing engine light means that the problem is bad and can cause converter damage, dont drive to much in this condition. the most common and only reason for a fleashing engine light is due to misfiring, this is due to a bad sparkplug or coil, the most common is a bad ignition coil , the other would be a bad ignition control module. there are many auto part stores that will scan the computer and give you a print out of the codes. the computer stores codes when it sees a problem and then turns engine light on. the scan will give the readout of codes these code will help in finding the problem. for example there may be a code that reads po301 cylinder 1 misfire. this would mean what it reads that cylinder one is misfiring. you would then check #1 coil and sparkplug. a good test would be to swap cylinder 1 coil with another cylinder and then drive for about 1 mile then have the auto parts store rescan the codes and if another cylinder is misfiring then you will know its a bad coil, for example if you swap cylinder 4 with cylinder 1 and the new code reads that now cylinder 4 is misfiring then you will know it the coil you moved and you will just need to replace it. good day.
Hi It sounds like the engine management system has detected a fault. I`m assuming its a petrol engine and the most common problem is one of the coils has gone.
To find the exact fault the car needs to have a diagnostic check which will tell you which coil or other component has malfunctioned.
Good luck i`m sure it won`t be a big problem
