I just had this same problem on my Deskjet 5550 printer. The orange light (ink indicator) was staying on. I found out that all you need to do is just open the front cover to the printer. If your printer is running out of ink, the print cradle will move to either the far left or far right side. If it moves to the far left side, the BLACK cartridge is low or empty and should be replaced. If the print cradle stays on the far right side, the COLOR cartridge should be replaced. Normally, when you open the front cover, the print cradle should move to the center. Hope this helps!

Your printer lights tell you which cartridge is empty. Do you have a manual for your printer? There should be light diagram in it . If you do not have a manual, you can download it here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=71896&lang=en
Just be sure that you get the right one for your printer. Good Luck and Op system.

    Planned Obsolescence

HP wrote it out of the program so it does not work with Vista. You cannot check ink Levels so you have to buy more cartirdges and a new printer.

    What Does Planned Obsolescence Mean?
A manufacturing decision by a company to make consumer products in such a way that they become out-of-date or useless within a known time period. The main goal of this type of production is to ensure that consumers will have to buy the product multiple times, rather than only once. This naturally stimulates demand for an industry's products because consumers have to keep coming back again and again.

    Also known as "built-in obsolescence".

Planned obsolescence does not always sit well with consumers, especially if competing companies offer similar products but with much more durability. Pushing this production too far can result in customer backlash, or a bad reputation for a brand.

I have hp deskjet 5550 printer, when i was trying to print a document there is no print out, two lights are blinking

Hi, This could be Low-Ink or paper Jam. Try turning off The printer, Unplug from The Mains Electric, for 3-5 Minutes. Turn back On, if Lights Are Still There. Check The Ink-Levels. And Replace Cartridges, if necessary.

The colour ink is not printing properly on my hp deskjet 5550 printer and I can't find how to do a clean

Hi there,
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , click Hewlett-Packard , and then click Printer Assistant .
  2. Click Utilities .
  3. Click View ink levels .
    • If a cartridge is low on ink, discontinue these steps, replace the cartridge, and then try printing again.
    • If the cartridges contain a sufficient amount of ink, continue to the next step.
  4. Click Printer Maintenance .
  5. Click Clean Cartridges .
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
PLease note the if you do not take prints regularly there are chances that the ink has dried up in that case refill or replace the cartridge.

Hope this helps. Please rate my response.
Thanks.
HAve a good day.

You may want to reinstall the printer software to correct this.
The drivers will be different and the software may not run the same due to Vista update.

I just had an online chat with a HP Technician, who told me that in Windows Vista, we no longer can access the Toolbox. But...here's another solution...I tried it and it works perfectly. Go to this web site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpd09173&dlc=en
