It sounds like moving gears worn or misaligned. Cover must be removed to see their condition and if it is repairable or spare parts needed.

Replace the Toner cartridge. That will fix it. The most common cause of this problem is a bad toner.

I was ready to give you some suggestions, when I ran into this little review from an unhappy customer with your same machine:

"My unit didn't hold up well at all. Makes a horrible grinding sound. Did some checking and learned this is a "very common problem with this model" and it's an issue they don't suggest you self-repair. I read that as a design flaw. The main drive gear that powers the fuser strips out. Can't get to it easily. Nice features but the copier gave out quickly. "

If the machine is not under warranty, I would do a little research on copier repair. You might find someone who has experience and parts of other machines and can help you. Be careful here, but it's worth a try. Sometimes a vbendor sells and repairs the copier brands he sells.Otherwise, perhaps you can take it into the company's service center and save your self some money on a service call.

Here is their information on obtaining service:

Good luck to you.

Do you a clicking noise or a grinding noise when you start it up?

That noise could be your scanner locked up.

Make sure the scanner unlock mechanism is in the unlock position underneath the left side of the scanner section.

Make sure the ribbon cable isn't binding up underneath the scanner. They tend to shift from their positions and can be secured by using scotch tape.

That is strange. Sometimes the gears in the auger of the cartridge can bind up.

Grinding is common on the machine. It happens in three areas, the scanner section, the fusing section, and the cartridge from time to time. As far as the latter one is concerned, that can happen from using off brand toner cartridges or refilled ones. If you get a cartridge that is genuine Sharp, it is exhanged for free within the six month window.

Service calls are not necessary for the cartridge.

If you are making more than 500 copies a day on this machine, that exceeds the recommended daily usage of this machine and will cause the gears to go out faster. Especially in the fuser section due to heat fluctuations.

Try first unplugging power cable for 5 minutes, this often clears the error. Also open all doors and inspect the copier for small pieces of paper or foreign objects stuck inside.

My Sharp Al-1642cs is leaving a black stripe on the paper when coping.

Does the line appear when you copy from the glass? Or is it Just the document feeder. If it is just throught the doc feeder then you have to clean the **** glass next to the main glass. It only takes a small dot to make a line. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.
