you will prob find the knob for the dryer has broken
so you turn the knob but it doesn't turn the switch
remove the knob which just pushes on and pulls off
and look at the shaft of the knob you may see it has cracked
if you do just replace the knob and you should be fine
When you have to put this question here, I don't think it is wise to try to repair it yourself. It can be caused by lots of different things, Like a defective heater, a lose connection or a defect thermostat. When your dryer does not have an overheating security switch that came out and you can't reset it, a skilled technician should see into the dryer. It works with voltages, to dangerous to work with, when you don't know what you are doing. Please be careful.
Common faults - 1 Theheating elementscan fail(meaning open circuit) 2 There arecut-outs (T.O.C's)thatmight need resetting 3 Thethermostats (stats)can tripout or burn out (meaning opencircuit) 4 Moderntumble dryers also have sensors andpcb's (Printed circuitboards)thesehaveprograms that can fail and circuitry although most should produce an errorcodeshowing you were the fault is. 5 Faultyconnections and burned wires may also bethe fault.

If you are located in the u/k, then you should be covered by Hotpoint 5 year guarantee, all parts are free you pay for labour and call out.
It might be worth you checking the heater at the rear of the m/c located behind a removable panel. disconnect one of the wires going to the thermostat and try it , if it does not trip, then it could be heater, also you might have damp where heater is ,use hair dryer to dry it all, and make sure all your filters are clean, and that the water tank is empty.

the steam gets condensed back to water and pumped away so sometimes draining problems cause poor drying. is the machine plumbed in according to handbook?
also your dryer filter may be blocked but this is not accesable without the dryer box being stripped down.
