Either using Outlook (local access), Outlook Web Access (Internet access) or Exchange ActiveSync (Smartphone/PDA access).
All of these methods allow you to access your Contacts.
They use MAPI (Mail Application Protocol Interface).

Are you using backup exec 9.1 by any chance?
There seems to be a problem (incompatibility) with win2k3 sp1 and BE9.1 - even the microsoft emphatically deny it.
I got around my errors in BE9.1 by not using the Volume Shadow Copy service
Just a thought. Or there is also the possibility to use third-party tools such as edb repair EDB Repair Kit. It can also help in your problem. Try to Use all the tools and some of them should help.http://www.edb.repair/

Exchange server 5.5

Firstly, Retention periods may be set up in the exchange so that mail is kept within Exchange for a period of time even thought the users may have deleted it. Check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246283 to change the standard retention policy to suit.

Also using a tool to defragment the Exchange Database may be useful - Try PerfectDisk for Exchange. But remove as much other stuff as possible first as it needs space to work.

A couple of things... Exchange 5.5 has been replaced three times now and support ceased from Microsoft on 31st December 2003. NT Server support ceased a year later and is about to be replaced for the third time as well. I'd REALLY look at getting more up to date software on suitable hardware.

When deleting emails, remember any legal requirements you may have for retaining / archiving emails.
