I have Toshiba Satellite A105-S4054 with me. I uninstalled windows xp operating system and tried installing the same with the recovery cd. The recovery went on well till the status bar showed 69% completion, after which the system showed an error "10E7160017. Recovery error. Please press ok to turn off the computer". After clicking ok the system rebooted from hard drive and showed the following error "Winnt_rootSystem32Hal.dll missing or corrupt:Please re-install a copy of the above file". I am trapped now. What should i do for installing windows xp now. pls help
Can you reboot and get into windows or is now corrupt?
What do you mean by 'uninstalled XP'??
You cant uninstall it unless you format the drive, in which case the recovery discs are now probably useless as they rely on a folder on the HDD called i386.
Recovery discs normally dont have the OS on them, they rely on the I386 folder to gather info about the computer and then restores it to the state when it was new.
If you can acess the system, reboot and go into the bios and change the boot sequence to CD, then insert the first recovery disc. then save the settings and the computer will reboot and start the recovery process again, this should clear up the error.
If it does not it will be because the i386 folder is missing in which case you can either explore the recovery discs for it or you will have to buy a copy of Windows XP.
There is a chance, navigate to the i386 folder on the recovery disc, and look for a file called 'winnt32.exe' and run it.
This will allow you to re-install WinXP.
You will need your serial number though!
If your system is not bootable into Windows XP, then you will need to run the file from a dos command prompt.
on my back-up cd that i created I would type d:/i386/winnt.exe and this would run the install file.
On your disc, the i386 folder may not be on the root of the cd, so the best thing to do is to put the cd into another PC and explore the disc to find out the true path to this folder...
for example d:/recovery/winxp/i386/winnt.exe
write it down then go back to the laptop and in the command prompt type in the full path as you wrote it down.
You may get an error saying there is a file missing, dont worry about that, as you will get the installation wizard appear - choose 'new installation'.
One of the options you will get is to format the HDD, make sure you choose it as you will then get a completely fresh installation free of any errors.
Let me know how you get on.
