Help on RCA RP 9520

This solution is probably a little late but I thought I would post for the benefit of others. I just fixed a RP-9520 that was acting just like you described. I would turn it on, put in a CD and it would try to read it, fail and then shut the stereo off. I could then turn it back on and remove the disc or try again. So what I did was remove the side panel of the unit-the one with all the air slots in it. You have to remove 10 screws and then pry it a little cause it kinda snaps in and out of place. Once you get that removed you can see the whole insides. What I did was take a vacuum cleaner and blew the dust out cause it was awful dusty. Then I gently wiped down the disc carasoul with a paper towel dampened with rubbing alcohol. Then finally I got to the last and most important step - cleaning the CD laser. All I used is a Q-tip with some rubbing alcohol on it. Gently clean the laser then dry it with a dry Q-tip. Let it sit for a couple minutes and give it a try. Mine worked like a charm! By the way I've used this method on 2 other stereos that had non-working CD players and cleaning the CD laser lens fixed it each time. My guess is that the majority of malfunctioning or non-functioning CD players is simply a dirty lens. If you can access the lens and clean it, you will probably fix the CD player. Hope this helps someone out there!

Can't tell you what the problem IS, but having worked on quite a few 9520's,
I can tell you this is not a common problem, and not one I would expect to
be resolved at the DIY level. Troubleshooting with a 'scope, voltmeter and a
knowledgeable technique will be key here.

Hi,

Don't know of any other place to post your question. I did have another
thought though. I worked on one 9520 where one or more discs had gotten in
under the disc carousel and knocked out the little posts that the
photo-interrupter uses to sense the disc position. I don't remember the
power shutting off, though. I think the carousel just rotated indefinitely.
