Hi there, ive been doing a bit of head scratching over this one as i needed to check my facts. i think the belt has a automatic spring loaded adjuster so it sounds as if you need a new belt for it.
good luck

Troybilt Horse Rototiller tines slipping but not belt

Do you have the 2 speed or 4 speed version?

Do the drive wheels always turn when engaged?

Did you check drive shaft end play? Severe wear of the drive shaft sleeve, spacers, shims, and two drive gears can accumulate enough so as to allow the tine drive gear to displace far enough that it will no longer engage the large brass worm gear.

I am in need on line of the owners manual for troybilt "8-hp Horse" tiller and fluid capacities and type/weight of oil used in front transmission and rear tine gears. Thank you, Sincerely, Wm....

This is as close as I could come to your exact model from this site. This is for a 8HP Briggs Horse model with rear tines. I hope this can help you. This site (the manuals site) needs to update to newer models. First a link to the site I use and secondly, the PDF online file of the 8 HP Tiller for you.

I am currently looking at buying a troybilt horse with serial # 340455. Can someone let me know what year this is?

That tiller was made sometime between 7/1/78 and 1/1/79. This is the Horse II model and is a four speed one belt tiller. The Horse I was a two speed two belt tiller. These are very good tillers if they have been reasonably taken care of.

Hi! i have older troybilt rear tine tiller and would like tires and if possible a owners manuel the only serial # i could find is 464932. do you have access to older parts for equipment such as mine?...

http://www.mtdparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/OperatorManualView?storeId=10101&catalogId=19502&langId=-1

Go to the above website and put in your model and serial number. If it is a Horse tiller just type in Horse and your serial number and you can download a copy of your operator manual. If it is the Horse model it was built between 1/1/80 and 7/1/80. i believe you have a Horse II four speed model that will just have one drive belt the older Horse I tillers were two speed with two belts.
Most any good tire shop can supply tires for your tiller or you can order them online and take then to a shop to mount for you. If your tires are not real bad they can just put tubes in them so they will hold air. Almost all parts are available through MTD who owns the Troy Bilt name now or through many sites online.

Good Luck,

Frank

The tines on my troy built Horse tiller do not grb when tilling. Are the gears in the drive shaft the problem? How do you fix this?

Since there is no grinding noise, if the problem is in the gear box it isn't too severe. There is a slight possibility that a tooth or two has been broken off one of the gears. But it sounds more like you have a worn drive belt. Most of the time when the tines don't grab or they slip it is because the drive belt have become worn in some way. If it is suppose to be a one-half inch wide belt it could have thinned to a three-eight inch allowing the belt to drop further into the pulley than needed, or it may be "sloppy", not tightening enough to operate the tines if it has stretched. The right belt is very important and is an easy fix. I hope this helps.

Belt seems to be slipping

good evening. I would suggest checking the tine bearings as well alignment. I had (have) a 2003 mtd rear tine which blew the entire bearing box for the second time. The times should have little to no flex when push or pulled. Fortunately, MTD came good for the first rebuild even though my warranty had expired...they covered the parts and labour was all mine. If the tines seem properly working, possibly try out this website to get the 100% correct belt....hope this helps.
