Recovery discs are fairly usless for a complete fresh re-install if you just use them 'as is'

If you can still access the system from F8 safe mode you need to find a folder called i386 its normally located at c:/i386
Once you have found it copy the folder to a blank cd

locate the i386 folder on the disc, then from within that folder look for a file called 'Winnt32.exe'

Run this exe file and you should be able to re-install the OS with a complete format.

You will need your XP serial number.

If by chance you dont have this folder on the HDD anymore, either because you deleted it or it is corrupted by the things you have already tried, then look on your recovery discs, it is unlikey the folder is there though.

You need a working copy of the i386 folder for the recovery discs to work properly anyway. So if you dont have a copy of it, then you will be looking at buying a copy of XP or borrowing a disc that was the same build as you had (the serial number only works on certain builds)

If you can boot go to safe mode using F8, see if you can do system restore from start/programs/accessories/system tools.

If you cannot boot, or system restore does not work you need to reinstall Windows, either using recovery CD from Acer, or generic Windows disk. In last case you will need to reinstall driver after installing windows.
If you do not format hard disk or delete partition, you will be able to recover your data (documents, pictures, music, desktop contacts etc) after installing Windows.

Always better than incinerating your Acer.

GX620 Dell, will not boot, 3 green steady lights and power lite, usb light....when i power on, it looks at the hard drive, then stops. monitor has blinking cursor...no bios comes up, and cannot access...

Does anything ever post to the lcd screen when you press the power button to boot it? Does it every show you things like which key to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup?

I think you have a corrupt or missing boot file or system file. The blinking cursor is indicative of that. Try running the Check Disk Utility from your XP CD.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Hi Fixya,We have a desktop pc running windows xp and it does not seem to boot up,the screen stays blank but it does tell us there is no signal to it.I suspect the hard drive has got corrupted somehow.Also...

Hello miriamhyman
Extract the corrupted HDD out of your machine and place it in a external usb box .
Install a new hdd inside your computer . You will have to reinstall Windows XP but you can't find it any more at Microsoft's . Here is a place where you can still buy it : http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/page_id=186/form_keyword=windows+xp/rd=1/st=query
or buy a Windows 7 install disc ( the box contains two discs , one for 32-bit systems , the other for 64-bit . One of them will surely be compatible with your BIOS ) . Once done , connect your old hdd to the a USB port of your machine . You will be able to retrieve all your files but you will have to reinstall the programs .
Best regards ,
fanaudi .

I cant really seem to understand but if the computer beeps then you should take the RAM out and clean it and re-insert it. and try again. Sometimes the processor can give that kind of problem if it is faulty. But if after cleaning the RAM it still doesnt work please take it to the tech department.
I hope this solution is helpful.

Dell Dimension 5150 (& WinXP) - failure to boot up

you could try booting into safe mode, then you could try a system restore
look for the F8 option at the bottom after the first boot window,

youll know youve got it when you get the option to boot into safe mode, if this works you should get to your desktop, if you get the admin login its normally admin as user and leave the password blank.

if you cant get into safe mode, wait till you gt the recovery disks and try a system recovery before reinstalling

Black screen with cursor won't go any further

Start the Acer in Safe Mode. Let it settle on the desktop, so that it is ready to be used. Then check the screen's settings, using right-click on a blank spot on the desktop. See if you can get it out of the limited video mode in which it seems to be now.
Or simply shut it down again, and restart back into normal mode.
Frequently, this is all it takes to reset the video.

Good luck,
-a.

I m looking for recovery cd of my notebook TX 1301.

HP TX1301 - you should have got one with your computer or at least a utility on your computer which creates recovery discs using your own blank discs.

See this for Windows XP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph08097

Windows Vista
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=81351&docname=c00810334

If you are running Vista and you cant boot your computer , insert the vista installation disc into the drive , start the computer off the install disc , click repair my computer when you get the "Install Now" option to access vistas recovery tools from the disc
