Your Monitor might be shot. I would recommend you try another VGA Cable and 3 prong Power cable since it could be the cable as well . If you are still experience the image going black then the power inverter internally could be damaged and its not as easy as a simple backlight because if you are using the flashlight and no image is showing you are worse than I thought. I would recommend you try those two things and then also if you can try to connect it to another Computer who knows it could possibly be your desktop too like the video card going bad ?. If you dont have another computer try a laptop or a TV with the VGA option on them. Hope my answer gets you closer to a solution. Please Help rate me if I helped you out or not I am new but a very good tech.

Screen goes black but sound is good.

This sounds like the inverter which powers the display fluorescent has or is failed/failing. If you take a torch to the blacked out display can you see the image faintly? If so the unit needs repairing.

HP F1703 Screen goes black within seconds of startup

That is either the backlight or its power supply.

This is a bit tricky as you can get it fixed under warrenty but they will likely ask you to send back the entire computer not just the monitor. It is also something that you could fix or several shops could but the repair cost really isn't much less than a new monitor. You are not stuck using an HP monitor so anything will work and you can get quite a lot bigger or better for about $120 and up. Repair cost is going to be $80-$100 so as you can see for just a few dollars more you have a new warrentied monitor.

Samsung T220 Screen Flicker

When the LCD monitor display flickers and or has a black screen then the fault is usually a faulty inverter or the CCFL lamp. When you look at the screen at a sharp angle and you see a dim image then it is a backlight problem and it is caused by a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp.

Monitor Display

There is no virus that can damage the monitor. This is the way how to examine what's wrong with your LCD monitors. After you turned it on and the screen went black or stopped working, you have to check that if you can see the image on the screen or not by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. This is because of the CCFL lamps inside screen. Some of them were broken and it is very easy to replace. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so. Hope this help!! If anything I can help you with, feel free to let me know.
Thank you,
