Question about Philips CDC751 5-Disc CD Changer

Open Question

Discs in player but display says no disc

Several months ago I cleaned my cd lens with a Recoton Laser-Matic laser lens cleaner, which I've used for several years, and the player quit working. The display indicated that I needed to insert a disc. Yesterday, I tried to play a cd again and it played wonderfully for 2 songs then quit again. I had selected "shuffle" just prior to hitting "play". When it quit, the display showed "shuffle Disc 2", but nothing was happening. I took shuffle off, opened the changer and selected "quick play" and it played one song, stopped and displayed something that looked like an "I". I hit shuffle and the display showed "insert disc". I turned the player off, selected "play" and the changer rotated and "read" each disc and then displayed "insert disc" and then "no disc" even though I had 4 disc in the changer. I put the Recoton lens cleaner in again today, but the player quit before the cleaner was able to do anything and the player will no longer work, but only says "no disc". A service man told me to chuck it out 'cause it would cost me $40 just for him to check it out and a new player is so cheap these days, but if anyone has a fix, I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.

SOURCE: it is not reading the blank disks anymore

Sounds like that may be the case. You can buy one of those cd cleaning discs and try using that. or if you want to spend the time dis-assembling the recorder and use some rubbing alchohol and a q-tip to clean the laser lens. Otherwise not worth the cost to repair.

remove the cover and gently clean the lens with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol, then blow the lens dry. if all else fails, replace the optical pickup assembly (lens and spindle motor) or the whole player.

SOURCE: When I insert a CD-R

The message NO DISC may appear for several reasons:
1.No disc is loaded->Load a disc into the player, close the door and press PLAY
2.The disc may be defective->Try a different disc
3.The disc is placed improperly in the tray->Make sure the disc is properly placed and centered in the tray and if the disc has a label on one side, make sure the label is facing up
4.The disc is dirty->Use a soft cloth to clean the disc by wiping in a straight line from the center of the disc to the outside edge
5.If the player cannot read CDs/DVDs correctly, try using a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens before taking the device to service. Other cleaning methods may destroy the lens.
6.Using non supported discs may lead to playback problems or jamming in the slot loader or drive.

Crystal, try a different known working CD, if it does not play and has before, purchase a CD player cleaner kit and run it through the cleaning process or disassemble and clean as per instructions in attached links. Retry CD after cleaning, hope it works for you.

Philips CDR870

I think there are several other possible solutions for the Philips CDR870 which will make it record more reliably, although using the "proper" Music Disc and cleaning the laser lens with an appropriate lens cleaning CD, seem to be the best ideas. Also, try wiping the blank or partially blank CD using a lintless microfiber cloth from the center outward to remove smudges and fingerprints. Several "failed" discs miraculously recorded after wiping.

If you're willing to "go under the hood", (you;ll need a #10 Torx screwdiver to remove the cover screws), you might try gently vacuuming the inside of the unit, brushing components gently with a soft camel hair brush to dislodge any dust that has accumulated; then gently sucking it into the vacuum cleaner. Make sure you've disconnected power to the CDR870 first! Trying to reach the laser lens itself involves surgical like dis-assembly of the sub-chasis and technical skills way beyond those of the average techie. I strongly DO NOT advise it!

Another possible solution is to let the unit "warm up" for about a half hour prior to recording, this may "cook" some electronic parts, and maybe change an internal condition to reduce the "OPCFAIL" problem.

You might also try cycling through "Input Source" by repeatedly toggling the Input Button (19) from DIG COAXIAL - DIG OPTICAL - ANALOG. Sometimes this allows the electronics to "wake up". It also may help to be playing an actual input signal into the unit while trying this.

I, too, have had frustrations with the unit using several brands of consumer and professional grade CD's. Occasionally, I have been successful in getting the unit to record music onto CD-ROM Data Discs when it's not supposed to. I have recorded onto Maxell, Sony, TDK and Discmakers (professional) blanks with varying results. FYI Radio Shack now stocks Verbatim brand discs for Music Recording (about $10 for 25 pack). Make sure CD Recordable Discs say "Music" or "Digital Audio" on the outside wrappings. I am a professional recording engineer, and now plan to see if the manufacturer, Philips Consumer Electronics in KY, can help.
Good Luck with this problem, I'll keep watching this site for other solutions.

Hi _ I have a Marantz CD player a littl;e over 6 years old. Performed perfectly until today, when it started inserting brief gaps in the music, approx 1-2 seconds; at the same time the track / time...

laser cleaning cd's very rarely work. the only thing they are good for is if there is a build-up of dust on the lens. Sounds like you most likely need to have the laser replaced.

Does not read the disk

The laser pickup is at the end of life, try a cd cleaning kit or take it apart and gently clean the laser lens with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol and allow several minutes to dry. No change! the laser pickup assembly will need to be changed, not cost effective to repair far cheaper to replace.

Hi , can you help me, my JVC car CD player doesn't play the cd ,it takes few seconds trying to read and then ejects the disc.

If this is only occuring when you try to play burned discs, try burning them at a slower rate (2x or 4x)
If this is occuring with storebought discs, You'll need to clean your laser lens. Cleaner Cd's are available from pretty much everywhere that sells Discs.

The CD player is about 20 years olda and has worked fine until a few weeks ago. It does not play CD's now. We sprayed it with air to dust it. It worked again. The next time we tried it does not play...

Remove the top lid, you will need to expose the laser pickup assembly, dip a Q-Tip in rubbing alcohol, then carefully clean the laser plastic lens in a circular motion, allow several minutes to dry before using, failing that you may consider a new cd player.

My LG LM-M1040 mini hifi system will no longer read discs. It has been sitting in the same place since purchase 2yrs ago and has only been used a few times. can you help

The problem should be from the lens (laser).

The lens is weak and that's why it cannot read/load Cd's.

Get a lens cleaner and use it to clean the lens, but if the lens still does the same thing even after using the lens cleaner, then it means you would have to change the whole lens completely to a brand new one.

By so doing your player would play all Cd's with no problem at all.

Good luck.

Does not read CDs

Try to clean the laser lens if you have a lens cleaning cd or you can do it manually by disassambling it and very gently with a very soft tissue or a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol wipe the laser lens.Otherwise it seems the laser unit is dying and there might be a chance if you know some electronics to resurrect it by rotating slowly clockwise one small potentiometer located on the laser unit in very small steps and testing each time the effect in reading the cd.Or buy a new laser unit.
Hope that helps !

CD not playable

It sounds to me like the laser lens itself may be damaged or even broken.

Here is something you can try though, this might just work if the laser lens has some dust particles stuck to it. Just go to your nearest cd shop and buy yourself a laser lens cleaner disc, it is cheap.

Follow the instructions, and if the laser lens itself was dirty, this will help, otherwise the laser lens might be broken, which is a ver common problem, cause you used it for three years now.

Hope this can steer you in the right direction.

Kind regards
