Your execute for your operating system most likely corrupted by a rogue program "virus" or you hard booted the pc too many times and corrupted it. Either way format and reload your operation system with the factory restore disk or restore it if you can from the F key option that goes into the factory partition.

My laptop won't start, stuck on black screen. i have been trying to start my gateway laptop andevery time the welcom finishs' running it defaults back to the black sreen. why is this?

This could mean that the copy of Windows installed in your computer is either corrupted or damage and reinstalling or repairing your Windows should fix the problem.
But try doing System Restore first on safe mode before doing a Windows reinstallation or repair to save you from loosing all you files in your computer.

To do system restore on safe mode:

1. Restart your computer and when the Dell Logo comes up and keep pressing F8 until an option shows
2. Use arrows to navigate then choose safe mode
3. Click start button then choose All programs or Program depending on the Windows installed in your computer
4. Click on System tools then choose System Restore
5. Follow the intructions on the System Restore windows on how to restore your machine back to a previous date before this issue happen.
6. Your computer will automatically restart after restore is done

If the safe mode doesnt work then your last option is to reinstall or repair your windows:

1. Press F1 to go to BIOS then change boot priority - make sure your DVD drive is the first boot
2. When your done changing boot sequence press F10 to save and exit
3. Insert you Windows CD and and a meesage will appear on a black scrren "Press and key to continue" press any key. Windows file will load and options for Repair or Installation will appear
4. Choose 1 of the option then follow the instruction (Installing a fresh copy of windows is recommended)

You may not be able to access the recovery partition because you have reinstalled the OS.
Make sure that AC power is plugged in to prevent shutdown.

So to install HDD recovery, please do as follow:
  • Start your notebook after the bios screen press F8 to enter “Advanced boot options” (if you get the timing wrong, just restart and keep pressing F8)
  • Choose the first offered option “Repair my Computer” to enter Vista “System Recovery Options”
  • Choose the last option – Toshiba recovery option
  • Follow the menu on the screen

Please note that whole HDD will be deleted and if you have some important data please back it up
