Question about Tascam US-144 Sound Card

1 Answer

TASCAM 144 is not a soundcard, but an audio interface

After though much trial and error, I was able to get my TASCAM US-144 to finally output some sound from Cubase 4. I expected to be able to play back the standard GM banks 1-127 on a MIDI track. Unfortunately, and I think I'm correct on this. The TASCAM is an audio interface (which allows me to hear the sound from HALion One and the other VST instruments that Cubase 4 can play as well as used as a gateway for input via microphones, electric guitar, etc., but it cannot transmit the GM sounds through because its not in essence a sound card. If I should be able to hear output from the GM midi sounds via a MIDI track in Cubase 4 or if anyone with this device has been able to do it, I'd like to know how its done.

FYI, I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit Home edition running Cubase 4.1.3. Vista absolutely sucks in my mind. XP is so much better at recognizing the hardware and drivers everytime and never seems to present problems. Vista seems to find something wrong with every piece of hardware you plug in.

Any advice, tips, and yes, of course, if you get GM sounds out of this device is welcome. Thanks.

You are correct, there is no "voice generator" within the Tascam US-144.  It can simply transmit the very primitive note-on note-off type data to a Sound Module or keyboard (like a Roldan SoundCanvas), and then that would generate the actual waveforms.
A SoundCanvas would suit your needs well, as you could run the midi out to this voice generator, and then run the stereo output of that back through the Tascam and into the computer for recording.

I have a tascam mk144 audio interface. When I play a sound file I created in Band in the Box or Audicity, I get distortion and cut outs. I have updated the driver. What else can I try? Thanks. Scott

OK, well could be the soundcard. Make sure you have the most current drivers for your OS.
Second, it could be the latency setting is to high or too low. You can adjust this in the control pannel.
Third, it could be your amp is knackered or you have plug your soundcard into a phono input and you are overdriving the input causing distortion and the amp to cut out

Getting mic setup thru cubase le 4

Make sure phantom power is enabled on the Tascam audio interface and you must enable the input in cubase that corresponds with the interface input on the track you are trying to record to.

144 drops out

To see if it's your hardware, up your latency settings to "highest" via the tascam control panel. Also, be sure you are familiar with the various ways to up latency in your recording package: in cubase it's under device settings, vst bay. If this works, you know it's some setting somewhere. Try disabling your internet connections and setting pc performance to "background services" Also, read a pc optimization guide for daws - they are everywhere. Tascam will email one to you if you ask.

Lastly - try the asio4all driver. This fixed my pops, but when I understood all the various latency settings and set the tascam to highest latency, I could use the tascam driver. Highest latency on my p4 3.0 2gb ram pc means 12ms input and my output is 61ms.

If the asio4all driver works - it's a likely latency issue.

Tascam Us144 and Sonar3 problem!!!!

Try this experiment:  Record a click track on track #1.  Record track #2 of the output of a monitor speaker playing track #1.
Now you have two click tracks which will probably not be cooincident (like they should be).
Measure the offset of the two tracks!  You now know your latency exactly, and can compensate by adjusting settings or moving the vocal track back manually that many milliseconds!

Tascam midi and audio conflict error

Hi,
First try turning off the onboard audio device using the BIOS interface. Try pressing f4, f2 or delete key rapidly at the flash screen beginning when you first turn on the computer. Look around in the bios (usually in "integrated periperals" area) and disable any onboard audio options that you see.
-In windows XP you can go to Control panel - Sound Devices and change the "map through" feature, select your default device, and run a hardware test simulation with a microphone for each device. Nice setup btw.
