It sounds to me like your computer isn't detecting it at startup if it's not showing up at all. i would try a diffrent usb port, also thier is a connector peice in which you can connect it to your ps2 port. click the picture for the link to find this adapter.
Also, it could be your mouse itself. perhaps it had been droped er damaged in some way. you may need a new one.
