Question about Whirlpool Kitchen Ranges

Open Question

I have a whirlpool range, the model number is SF306PEGQ.The problem i am having is with the oven. The glow plug works, but the gas takes a long time to ignite and the flames come on and when they do are very small. When i tap on a square box attached to the bottom of the oven attached to the flame ports it works fine.I think the box is a valve operated by heat.Thank-You for your support.

SOURCE: viking range - gas flame on one burner does not change

It sounds like the repair man was correct. The only variable is the valve, if the rest of the burners are fine then it will be the valve

SOURCE: Gas Oven - no flame at Bake Baffle - Glow Bar glows fine

If the glow bar is working (glowing) it is the gas valve. BUT, the glow bar can also actually glow and still not be working 100% and letting enough current through to the valve. You could swap an identical valve out to check it, if you don't have a meter. It's more than likely the valve though.

It appears your gas valve solenoid has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to or and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

I have a whirlpool super capacity 465. The oven does not light each time I turn it on. It may take 30 minutestes for it to light at times. How can I fix this problem.

look at the color of the ignitor, if it is glowing orange, you need to replace it. it should glow white hot in order to open the gas valve to light the oven.

What does a bad starter on a gas oven act like or sound like? Our does not sound right it doesn't sound like the oven is lighting at the same time.

your ignitor may be glowing alright but not pulling sufficient amperage to open the gas valve properly, or fully. you will need an amprobe to test the ignitors current. typically it is in the 3.2-3.5 range or a little higher depending upon which model you have. your amperage range is listed on the sticker on the side of the gas valve below the oven.
it is hard to tell precisely as you did not list any model number to go by.
hope this helps,
best of luck,

Oven or broiler won't operate (no gas noise/smell or ignition noise) after power failure. over worked minutes before power failure is ther a factory reset button or something like that?

check one area at a time try the broiler first see if the glow plug or ignighter is glowing red hot the glow plugs have to get so hot before the gas valve will open, it is not usual for both to go at the same time, as for fuses or resets i have never seen these on any stoves, if you find that one works and the other does the glow plug is bad if not the gas valve may have went bad

Re:Whirlpool SF310PKE gas range

When the oven safety valve refuses to open and let gas through, it's almost always because not enough current is flowing through the ignitor. Often an aging ignitor will appear to be glowing pretty brightly but still won't draw enough current to make the valve open. The first thing to try replacing is the ignitor.

You describe your ignitor as "red and glowing" but oven ignitors normally get a lot brighter than "red" -- well into what I'd call yellow.
