Hi, thanks for your help!! I have a Netwave Model No. THD1690 set top box. It doesnt have S-Video but it does have a cord that converts the yellow RC plug to S-Video. It also has an HDMI port but at present I don't have an HDMI cord.

    Thanks,
    Ulysees

Thanks!! It's working well. Just wondering... the aerial I am using is the Foxtel aerial, could I put this Aerial into the HD Set Top Box and then into the Foxtel box so that I could get the Foxtel HD Channels? I will have to pay extra for the HD channels but they said I cant get them without a HD receiver. If it is possible could you please tell me what I need to connect.

    Thanks,

    Ulysees

    Hi,

I think if I do it this way I can get all the HD channels through Foxtel and then because the Foxtel goes through the DVD I would then be able to record the HD programs (they won't be in HD but at least I could get them). It would also let me have just one remote for all the stations.

We have an old Foxtel box, no IQ, so it is a straight forward antennae in, antennae out, and currently it links through the DVD.

    Thanks again.

    No worries, sleep well.

What I am trying to do is make it so that I can add the Foxtel HD channels to my package ie pay extra for them. This would allow me to record from the foxtel channels and use one remote. I realise this will cost me more a month but it would make things a lot simpler. Foxtel said there was no point paying for the HD channels unless I could receive in HD, so I thought putting the aerial through the HD set top box might work. Hope this is a little clearer.

    Cheers,

Hi,
Yes, you can connect an HD set-top box to the Panasonic recorder and record from it, but I will need to know the model number of the set-top box to be able to tell you exactly how to connect and how to record:

If your set-top box has a S-Video OUT port, you will be able to record both HD and SD (standard definition / non-HD) channels. If it does not have S-Video OUT, you will only be able to record SD channels. The Panasonic recorder only has S-Video and composite video IN sockets. S-Video will carry an HD signal, but composite will only carry an SD signal.

If you can let me know the model number, I can draw a connection diagram for you and let you know which settings to use on the player for recording.

Please reply to me with this information by clicking on "Add a Comment" below your question.

Thanks,
BElectric

OK, all the details you need for connecting the set-top box (STB) to the Panasonic recorder are below. I need to clarify a couple of important points first though:

    - You will not be able to record the HD channels, only the SD channels.

The only input on the Panasonic recorder suitable for receiving an HD video signal is the S-Video IN. Unfortunately, the Nextwave STB does not have S-Video OUT. You cannot record HD by converting the yellow RCA plug to S-Video because the STB will not output HD from the yellow RCA video port. Therefore, the video signal received by the Panasonic box will still only be SD, even though the video cable is connected to the S-Video IN port.

    - You cannot connect the two boxes with an HDMI cable.

Although the STB has HDMI OUT, the Panasonic recorder does not have HDMI IN. The HDMI OUT port on the Panasonic recorder can only be used for connecting to the TV.

Connecting the STB to the Panasonic recorder:

I've drawn a connection diagram and uploaded it to 'Flickr' as images posted within these messages tend to be a little on the small side and illegible. Please click on this link to open the connection diagram.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/57298187@N02/5669724108/in/photostream/lightbox/

I have drawn this using the RCA connections. As I explained above, there is no point converting the yellow RCA video cable to S-Video. I've also drawn the cable with the white jack in black simply for better visibility on the white background.

Recording from the STB on the Panasonic recorder:

The process for recording is the same for both DVD and VCR. You simply need to select which one you want to record to using the DRIVE SELECT key on the remote control.

    1. Switch on the TV, STB and Panasonic recorder.

    2. Set the TV to the input you would normally use for watching a DVD or video cassette

    3. Press the DRIVE SELECT key on the Panasonic remote to select DVD or VCR mode - depending on which one you want to record to.

    4. Insert a blank DVD or VHS cassette

    5. Press REC MODE on the Panasonic remote to select the recording mode (SP, LP, EP, etc)

    6. Press the INPUT SELECT key on the Panasonic remote to open the INPUT SELECT list.

7.Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys on the Panasonic remote to highlight IN1 then press ENTER.

You should now be able to see the channels from the STB on your TV screen. In fact, apart from this step the instructions for recording should be no different than recording when using a direct antenna connection to the Panasonic recorder. This simply instructs the recorder to record from an external device, i.e the STB.

    8. Select the channel you want to record using the Nextwave STB remote. The selected channel should now be displayed on the TV screen.

The recording channel has to selected on the STB, not from the Panasonic recorder. The Panasonic recorder simply records whichever channel it receives from the STB via the video input.

    9. Press REC to start recording

    Notes:

    - You can still use the timer recording feature. This should be done between steps 4 and 5 above.

    - After setting the timer or starting the recording, you can switch the TV off

    - You can only record the channel which is currently selected on the STB. If you change channel on the STB while recording, the channel being recorded will also change.

Hopefully, I've covered most things here. If you need any explanation of anything I've written above or you are still unable to record from the STB, please let me know.

    Regards,

    BElectric.

    Hi Ulysees,

Glad to hear thats working well for you. I'm not too Familiar with the Foxtel equipment and packages as I'm not in Australia but if you can let me know which Foxtel box and package you have, I could understand it a little better and let you know the best way to connect.

It's a little unusual though not impossible to 'daisy chain' two tuner/receivers so I really need to understand why you want to do it this way. It's more common to have separate aerial / cable connections and connect both boxes to the TV separately.

    Thanks.

    BElectric

I think I understand what you're trying to do but I can't see how that would work. I think what Foxtel mean is that you would need a Foxtel HD box. Connecting the Nextwave box into the Foxtel box would not give you Foxtel HD.

I think what would help most at the moment, would be for me to explain a little more about HD systems (devices, connections, receivers/tuners, etc) and we can go from there with regard to possibly changing the way your equipment is connected.

I've had a long day and I'm about to quit for the night. It'll take me a little while to write this out for you, so I'll have to get back to you in the morning. I hope that doesn't inconvenience you at all, but it's 5am here and I haven't slept yet!

I have DMEZ 47V DVD recorder/VCR combo and panasonic digital/ HD tv...when I set up to pre record the equipment seems to accept the information ok but when i try to playback all i get is ..."cannot...

The reason for this is simple; the built-in digital tuner does not support HD, only SD. You cannot fix it, at least not economically where the recorder combo is concerned. But you can obtain a separate HD set top box, and connect the outputs of it to the inputs of your combo if you really want to record HD channels. It's crude, but cheaper and easier in the long term, and it doesn't damage your machine.

Message appears unable to decode HD channels

DMR-EZ47V and EZ48V models do not feature a built in HD digital tuner - it is only SD - hence the reason it cannot decode HD. It is a model/design limitation; not a fault.

DMR--EZ48V

Your DMR is telling you that it is set to listen for RC2 but your remote is transmitting RC1.

Two choices for a fix:

1. Put the remote back into RC2 mode by simply holding both the ENTER and 2 button for at least 5 seconds.

OR

2. Reconfigure the DMR to listen for RC1 by going into the function menus and selecting SETUP. Look for the remote control option. Change it to 1, it will currently display the value 2.

Enjoy.
