The outer panel should come off from the back and bottom with screws. I believe that it will be a philips screwdriver that you need and once you remove the entire panel, you will basically have access to everything. Make sure you unplug it first and be careful to only work around the panel as I don't want you to get hurt.

good luck and let me know of any questions that come up while doing this

WILL NOT SHUT OFF, LIGHTS UP, TURNTABLE RUNS, MAKES NOISE, ONLY WAY TO SHUT OFF IS TO PULL PLUG OR OPEN DOOR

This is a classic door switch problem. I fixed a friend's MW a few months ago that had this exact symptom. Got a family member's MW going again last summer for similar (not identical) problem.

In our case, one of the switches was broken (shorted). There are usually a group of similar door switches all mechanically ganged together behind the latch. If the MW has a wiring diagram, you can use it to figure out which switch controls the light, fan and turntable. Check the switch with ohm-meter after you get it out. The switch plunger may have lost it's springiness.

You need to be clever mechanically to figure out how to disassemble for the R&R (remove&replace). Don't break plastic mounting pin or you may have to improvise repair for that too!. It may help to have the service manual for your particular model (worth a google search). The switch is probably relatively inexpensive ($5 or so) and a generic replacement should work fine if it has the same-or-higher voltage and current rating.

MW runs when Door is opened and stops running when door is closed

It's almost certainly a defective door switch or switch mount.

My complete text file on door switches is here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Check to make sure one of the plastic hooks on the door was not broken off. If both door hook latches are functional then the most likely cause of your problem is one of the latch switches located behind the control panel. These switches will fail if the oven user opens the door frequently BEFORE the cook cycle ends. Always push STOP/RESET before opening any microwave oven door.

The extreme heat has opened up one of the thermostats / thermal cutouts (TCOs) in the oven.

If it was the bottom TCO or magnetron TCO, you should be able to access them by just removing the control panel.

But if it's the one on top of the cavity, the oven will have to come out of the wall, then you need to pull of the outer cover..

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

You should locate and look this over first.

Fmv156dsb, when the timer is on you have to push up

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount (which are pretty simple problems to fix) or occasionally a problem on the control panel.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

Oven door

It's probably not the spring.

It's probably a broken spring mounting tab on either the inside panel of the oven or the "door key", which is the part that has the hook like projections that go into the chassis behind the door.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the screws you need to remove.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Panasonic MW- Arcing

You're on the right track. That panel is the waveguide cover.

This is usually due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover in the waveguide just out of sight.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smmoth and clean.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart or Lowe's.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

Stuck Microwave door

In most cases this is due to a broken door opening lever or loose or broken door latch / hook parts. They can only be accessed and examined if the cover is removed from the microwave. In many over the range models, you can access the door parts by removing the control panel assembly. Sometimes you may be able to get it open by pushing up gently on the bottom of the door while pushing the button, in case you need to empty it.
