How do I determine what is realy wrong?

How can I tell if it is the light engine that is wrong? In the begining the screen would get vertical lines, in all different colors. I would reset and it would be OK for a while. It kept geting worse as time went by. It Stoped going out when I put the A/C on in the house. After a month I turned the set on and the picture would come on and be OK for about 15 sec. and then go black. Every thing else workes The Sound, Changing channels works, Just no picture. I called the local Toshiba tech. He had no testing tools and seemed to no nothing about toshiba dlp's. I live in a small town and have no other people to ask.I told him what had been happening and he called Toshiba and they thought it was the main board. It cost over $1100.00 . I was hoping that it might be something else. please help I need to get it fixed but I havent worked in over 8 months and have very little money. thanks Gary

I contacted PTS eletronics and they say I need to be more specific on the part . what would the tec name be for the main board?

  • garyndianf Aug 11, 2008

I am having a problem. Can anyone tell me what the board is called. The people at PTS eletronics say that, the main board shows to be the power board, and the cost is only $100.00 The power is not the problem the set turns on and works fine just no picture. I tried to contact http://fixmymonitor.com/ but no answer on the phone and no luck at the site.

It sounds like the mainboard but can be the flyback as well. The flyback transformer is the culprit in atleast 60% of the sets i fixed with similar problems. It is found on the large signal board on the right hand side. I suggest that you test if its alright before replacing the mainboard. Click here to get the testing instructions

Oops! i Forgot! The flyback transformer is a high voltage device and you should be extremely cautious while handling it. It has suction cup kind of plugs and and just squeeze and pull. You should avoid touching the ends of the cups where it makes contact with the board. Be careful. Your life and limb is worth much more than this.

Its recommended that you try the FBT first. It can save you atleast a 1000$.As for the board it is called the D-board. The part number will be located on the board itself in some sets. If it is so you can get me the part number so that I can help you find it for a lower cost.

The two things could be the mostly the problem
1)the fuse (which is very cheap)
2)the main board(which is very expensive)
if you get it replaced from a professional company technician you will get a warranty of about six months, and if get it your self you will definately save some money but it would be without garantee and thats more risky.
one thing you can do is get it checked by some local technician instead of company technician he will definately charge you less than the company technician and also give you the garantee on his own risk and also try to repair the main board if possible or try changing the fuse .

It may be also a cold solder or bad electrolytic capacitor problem. but some special experience is needed in such troubleshooting work. Better take it to a n electronic repair shop unless warranty has not expired.

Hi , it seems you are experimenting a light engine problem. Here's how your tv works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLLHnQ4y-wo Basically there's 3 LCD chips that create the colors and image by blending together. When these chips start to melt you will get those blue spots, pixilation even vertical lines. You will need to replace the light engine, found the one you need here http://www.discount-merchant.com/SONY-1-788-156-11-p/1180225.htm?Click=48173 Have a blessed one!

My tv has this lines that bend over the front top of the screen and when an object moves through the lines the image appers from the the top of where the line begins...and the tv goes black every once and...

This sounds like a vertical deflection fault. There are some components that are failing in the vertical deflection area that are starting to fail. It is very common in many of the sets that there are electrolytic capacitors in the vertical amp section that are gong out of specifications.

When you have at the top or the bottom of the screen where the vertical axis is compressed, and the picture in the compressed area looks like it is inverted and going over on itself, this is called "vertical fold-over".

An experienced TV service technician should be able to service this for you.

Dlp problem

The unit has a defective light tunnel contained within the light engine. This part is not easily replaced and you will a qualified tech to replace it. Many service centers condemn the light engine at a much hight cost. Do not buy or let someone tell you the light engine must be replaced. This repair requires only the light tunnel.

A line on the screen

Is the line perfectly strait? Is it seem to be yellowish in color? If it seems yellowish then the light engine is the problem is the blue panel is defective. Sony covers the light engine for two years. The labor you will probably pay for but, not bad concidering the part is 1000.00 or more.
