When youclick Refresh network list, then Choose yourwireless network and then click Connect to your secured WirelessNetwork, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connectinto your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, orWPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used to configure the Wireless Router. The Passphraseis an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrasethat was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router.
For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in thelaptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

Windows 7 Atheros network adapter will not connect to WRT54GS Linksys Router

First, use a lan calble to reach the router. Then check the settings on the router and see what ip address is assigned to your laptop. Also check the password setting on the router. Try using WPS as an alternative to setting up the password, etc. WPS will work with either a pin number or push button. It should solve your problem. If not, then use the first solution, although it may be a little more complicated for you. Last thing you can do is go to into Microsoft's network and sharing center, and choose "manage wireless networks" and make sure the adapter is "enabled".

How can I locate the PIN number of the router I have on the Linksys tag the model, under that a S/N# under that a MAC#? Is my MAC# the PIN#?

Are you trying to connect to the wireless network on the windows VISTA / 7 computer? Sometimes it willl ask you for PIN number. you don't need to enter the PIN number. On the same page you will get the option, I don't want to configure, i want to enter the key. click on it and it will go to the next step. if you network is secured then it will ask you for the network key. Enter the key and it will connect you to the network. If you are trying to add any other wireless device in the network then try to bypass this step and connect to the network manually.

We just added a second laptop to our home network and in setting up the laptop for wireless it asked for a pin number for our linksys wireless router but the pin number is not on the unit and we don't have...

Yes this is very straight forward

open internet explorer on your computer which is connected to wireless router.

browse to your gateway address. The default for linksys is usually http://192.168.1.1

then it will ask for username and password

linksys default username: (leave this blank)
linksys default password: admin

if that doesn't work try username: admin
password: admin

Once logged into console you should be able to see wireless security settings

Click on that and it will take you through to a page with your security settings on there you will see a wireless key or network key or wireless passphrase.

simply make a note of the key as its written. (If the password is masked or *********** out ) which is the case on some of the newer linksys devices you can simply overtype the password with a new one, bear in mind that you will have to then update any clients that normally connect to the wireless network with the new password. So thats all computers, laptops, DS's Wii's Playstations & Xbox's.

******I'd STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT change the wireless password / security key over wireless you should always do it using an RJ45 ETHERNET cable connected to your computer and the router. *********

Thanks

Can't connect to linksys wireless router

It's the particular type of security you've got set up. Some formats of security require the key to be between a minimum and maximum number of characters, some require it to be a set number of characters. If you have problems, reset the router using the reset button on the back, and run the setup again.
