Start with a boot disk. run a scandisk to find any errors, then try using fdisk to reconfigure your partitions, enabling you to format. this has worked for me in the past with desktop pcs.

My laptop was formatted recently from vista to xp and now whenever I plug and external device like flash drive, it freezes/hangs the system and will only normalise after I force shut down.

You should install the drivers required to run the system correctly.
Go to www.toshiba.computers-europe.com and there you will be able to update the firmware and software as you require it.
Hope that helps.

M55-S135 Randomly Powers Off Whenever Moved

Hi,

The only problem i see here is the Battery contact with your laptop.
Its somewhere loosely connected. Just get it checked or you can test it yourself, hold the battery tight to your laptop and shake it and test it like it will shut down in any other case, if its not, then surely its a battery loose contact problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Toshiba laptop reboots when on AC Power

I have the same problem with my Toshiba too, prima facie, it looks like Toshiba and Vista don't make a good combo. I suspected this to be a pure hardware problem, but was disproven when I booted in safe mode. It does not have any problems with the AC Power on in Safe mode.

It seems that when you formatted, you took your Bios settings with it. The latest bios can be obtained from toshibas website....Below is a direct link to the bios.

SHUTTING DOWN

I have the same problem and I tried everything and finally I realised it was one of the two ram modules installed. I took it out and it didnt turn off anymore.  But then I installed a 1gb ram module from my other laptop and the computer started shutting off whenever I connected the power adapter so I think it might be the wrong memory but taking the bad chip out solved the problem
