Hello roger. I am the bearer of bad news for this answering machine. There is no easy fix to this problem as the circuit board is bad. This happens because the solder in the circuit board eventually deteriorates and no longer works properly. Joe

The ring time setting allows you to set the number of rings the caller hears before your answering system plays the outgoing message. You can set the ring time to answer after two, four, or six rings. If you enable the Toll Saver (TS) setting, the answering system picks up after two rings if you have new messages, and after four rings if there are none.

Setting the Number of Rings

  1. Press Menu/Select.
  2. Select the Ans. Setup menu, and then the Ring Time submenu.
  3. Move the cursor to select a ring time (Toll Saver, 2 Times, 4 Times, or 6 Times).
  4. Press Menu/Select. You will hear a confirmation tone.

The answering machine comes on before we get a chance to answer the phone. Is there any way we can delay the answering machine to come on after about 6 rings

Well without a model tough to say for sure. Sometimes there is a switch on the unit to make it go More rings. They are usually marked 2 4 or 6. But if you were to include what make and model. Could be more help. =)

Will not receive incoming fax. Everything tests OK

First, Connect the Phone line in Line 1 EXT at back of printer

Check the No. of Rings on your Answer machine.
If you have 4 Rings set on Answer machine then you need to set 6 Rings on the printer ( as simple 2 rings more than your Answer machine )
And you need to turn off ECM on the Printer setup

Press Setup button
Scroll till you find Fax Settings - Press OK
Choose Rings to Answer - Set it - 6 ( based on the Rings on Answer machine ) - Press OK
Check for ECM - Error Correction Mode - Press OK
Turn it OFF - Press OK
Check for Auto Answer option - Turn it ON too.

Try to receive Fax.. it should come thru.

How to set hp1040 fax to work with aout answering

Hi,

If you are using the same phone line as your fax, you can start by connecting the answering machine on Line2 or 2-Ext at the back of the fax. Set the fax to answer on two rings higher than the Answering Machine. (for example: if answering maching is 4 rings, fax is 6 rings)

And then, turn on the auto answer.

Number of rings before recording answers

Choose how many times the line will
RINGS IS...” ring before the system answers a call.
• Set for 2 to 7 rings, or choose
Toll Saver 2/4 or Toll Saver 4/6.
• When set to Toll Saver 2/4, the system
answers after four rings when you have
no new messages and after two rings
when you do. Toll Saver 4/6 causes the
system to answer after six rings when
you have no new messages and after
four rings when you do.
• During setup, the Message Window will
display the number of rings (8 for Toll
Saver 2/4, or 9 for Toll Saver 4/6).
