Will not power up

Even with new batteries nothing happens when turned on

When I put in fresh batteries sometimes it will come on but when I have to power off and then try to use it again, it says replace the batteries. So, I put fresh batteries in and it still will not work. Does not even power up anymore. Does it require a "special" kind of batteries? The manual says it will use AA Alkaline batteries. I have tried rechargeable and non rechargeable. HELP !!

Sounds like it's broken. If it's new, I'd return it if you can. Even if it's something you can get past on your own it may indicate other problems and you don't want to risk it going out when you need it.

Sounds like electrolytic capacitor dried up needs curing, which is power on capacitor and left it absorb some moisture in humidity on power. Some time a few minutes, hard cases may take a few days.

When I turn the power on the lens extends out of the camera and the power on light immediately goes off. The lens stays extended. no photo can be taken. This is a SonyDSC-P73 camera.

The only time that happens with mine is when I am low/out of battery power. I usually have to replace the batteries (even if the lens is still out) and then it works fine. Find it happens more often with rechargeable batteries because they still have a bit of power left, where regular batteries have nothing left after they 'die'.

Try another battery. Even though you bought a new battery and charged it doesn't mean it is not bad.

I was borrowing the camera so the simple solution was quality long life batteries than the cheap versions (even though they were new) I had installed.
