Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Not communicating with PC cpu

I have a WD 500 GB external hard drive...I believe it is the same as the current "My Book" model. I purchased it two years ago.

I checked all cords and everything appears to be connected tightly. However, the ext. drive is not "communicating" with the pc. In otherwords it is not showing up as a connected device on "my computer". The blue light is on, however, it stays on and will not shut off at all. It is as if the unit is "frozen" and will not respond to anything.

I am a computer user and not a computer "techy" so do not know if this unit is gone for good or if there is something that can be done. These units do not come with any S/W and are "self-installing" when connected so do not have anything to try that way.

Any suggestions or do I just bury it cause it's a gonner????

It's not a gonner just yet :)

Did you do a firmware update? did it go ok?

The firmware update for these older models should not be applied unless you are having a problem with the firewire connection, and as yours was working it should not need an update.

Try disconnecting the power from the unit, switch off your PC and wait a few mins, power back on the drive, it should startup up and the light come on, now power up the pc and when booted check to see if it is now seen in 'my computer'

There is not much else you can do with these drives, so if you have done everything then I'm afraid you have lost all your data...

But the drive is still not a gonner....

Goto to WD website and register yourself and your product, you will need the serial number from the back of the drive.
Once you have entered all the details needed, WD will tell you the expiry date of the warranty for the drive, which is normally around 5-10years.

Start a warranty claim with WD and they will replace the drive for you free of charge (apart from the postage you will have to pay to send it to them)

The procedure can be little confusing, just make sure you read everything and keep copies, and follow everything they ask you to do.

Hope this helps a little.

Why is there a question mark on my WD My Book 500 external Hard drive short cut?

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk!

How do i use a wd external drive 500 gb on a mac & pc

The MAC can read and write PC files but not the other way around.
To do this the USB external hard drive needs to be formatted using the PC and formatted in FAT32.
Once this is done then you can exchange data between the MAC and PC.

When i plug in my western digital my book home edition to my pc it shows no folders in it like there is nothing there can you please help

Try connecting it to a different USB port on your computer.
Try connecting it to a different computer.

If it still is under warranty, W.D. will repair/replace it (but won't try to "rescue" your data).
If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a 'Customer Loyalty' program; buy a new W.D. disk-drive from their web-site, and enter the serial-number of your current disk-drive, to get a discount on your purchase.

Or, disassemble the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' in a desktop computer, to see if the files can be accessed _not_ through that adapter.

Note that you could put a different, compatible, disk-drive into the enclosure, to build your own external storage device.

There Was alarm sound coming from the hard drive i pulled the power line out of the drive waited then reconnected now there?s no blue light on the drive and no communication with the pc the drive is...

It sounds (pun intended) like the disk-drive inside the casing overheated, and that created the alarm. Unfortunately for you, it seems to have been a "fatal" problem.

If your drive is still under warranty, W.D. will replace it.
If not, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- you can get a discount on buying a new My Book from W.D.'s web-site, because you currently have a W.D. product.

The system is slowing down when I use WD 500 GB ...

Hi mortonwood12. it could be two things. 1.- you have way too much information on that drive and 2.- either the enclosure or the hard drive is going bad. (Sorry to be this harsh). What I recommend is get another hard drive and backup all your data "pronto"!. Then remove the hard drive from the enclosure (it could be a little tricky) and then trying connecting the hard drive internally. If you still have the same problem, then it's the hard drive. Dont use it anymore. I wont get any better. I hope this helps and please dont forget to rate and provide positive feedback for our free support today. Thank you :D

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

WD My Book 500 GB external drive sometimes clicks, but still works?

Does it seem to work properly and in a timely fashion? If so don't worry about it. Since it is an external drive it may be slightly quieter than you are used to. Laptop HDDs barely make a sound....

Also keep in mind if there is hardly any data on it, it's not going to have to make much noise to begin with.

How do I get the files from the WD external (500 GB) to my computer

In this case the MOST effective way is to try some data recovery program to see if it can help rescue your data on your WD external.
