Question about SmartDisk 160GB FIRELITE PORTABLE FIREWIRE HARD DRIVE 5400 RPM 2.5IN 160 GB FireWire 400

Won't recognize on windows XP(SP3)

I just downloaded Widows XP(SP3) to my laptop- and had numerous problems with my external drives being properly recognized. Still can't get my Smartdisk Firelite USBFLB160 to recognize on my laptop- but it will come up on the desktop running XP(SP2). What is the problem? Are there some setting that need to be adjusted now?

Have the same problem. Thanks for the comment, it does work temporarily. Make sure you highlight the drive in the bottom portion of the screen once the disk management application is open, then select choice to make partition in here you'll have the option to assign the drive and then decide if you would like to format too or just assign drive.

    hope it helps

Try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.

Turn the computer off without the external hard drive being plugged in.
plug the external hard drive in a usb port, power up, the systems post boot up will find the drive and inform windows what hardware is installed.
When windows boots up, it will look at all the hardware and find the external hard drive, when windows finishes booting up you should be able to see the drive in my computer.

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive to preview whether your files can be recovered. BTW, you can get it from
Data Recovery for Mac OS X
Data Recovery for Windows OS

Remember: Do not save your recovered data onto the same externalhard drive, otherwise the files you want to recover may be written over.

I have the same problem. Go to Programs-Run: diskmgmt.msc. You can assign the drive a letter and then XP SP3 will recognize it. The problem is you still have to do this every time you plug it in.

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

Hello,

If your external HD works with other notebooks then the XP SP3 operating system may cause that problem. There may be a driver conflict.

To solve that you should change the drive letter name of your external hard disk. To be able to change the drive letter of it, you can install and run the "Tweak UI" software which is downloadable from the windows website. To download Tweak UI software for windows XP, please click here.

1. After installing and running the Tweak UI you will see the screen below.

You can access your system settings using this tool such as disk drives, and you will be able to change the current settings.
Be careful not to change the other settings.

2. Click on "My Computer > Drive" as shown in the picture below.

And assign another drive letter to your external hard disk (for example checking drive letter F:) and click button "Apply".

3. Then restart your computer to see if it works.

This is one of the solutions that I did before. Your problem may need different solution. This is possible then you can ask again. Fixya experts solve every problem.

But I hope this helps.

All the best.

My pc now recognizes the drive as a local drive, but the drive cannot be read. Is it possible to restore the drive without deleting the files on it? They are some extremely important.

There are several things to try:
1) Disconnect all USB devices and restart the computer. Then plug in your external Hard Drive. In some cases, this has worked to enable external devices as there's a conflict between some USB devices. Once working, you can add any other USB devices you have.
2) Since the drive is recognized by XP, right click on it and if you have access to Tools, try to check the volume for errors. It may ask you to reboot and do a scan disk on startup. Sometimes although the computer recognizes the volume, it hasn't sufficient information as to how to access it. Running a scan disk can cure that problem.
3)Re-assign the drive letter; Occasionally XP can't access a path to the external drive; if it assigns a letter, in turn it will gain access
Change Drive Letter
The link above provides step by step instructions to change the drive letter
4) Run Windows Update and install SP3; Service Pack 3 addresses issues with external devices that weren't fixed in either SP1 or SP2
I do hope one of these answers provides a solution to your problem. Please post back with any other questions or just to let me know how you made out. Unfortunately, you have a common problem but no one FIX has been identified by Windows to solve it.
Best of luck!

There's a good chance the shop you bought the drive from didn't have SP3 installed. For some reason, SP3 has an issue with USB peripheral devices. Windows has created a patch to rectify the problem. Click on the link below and install the "Fixit" patch to enable your PC to recognize your HD. Best of luck.

Click on the link below and then click on the "Fixit" button. Windows has a patch for all external devices not recognized by PC's including HD's. This is especially an issue for those who've recently installed SP3. Best of luck with your problem.

Driver needed for 2gb kingston usb

If it is Win XP with SP1 ( check this - tight click My Computer, click Properties and check if it is Service Pack 1), then you need the latest SP from microsoft (that is SP3).

WinXP not recognizing USB drives, the SP is the most common cause I  have seen. Update to SP3 and it should solve your problem.
