Question about Acer Aspire 5003WLMi Notebook

1 Answer

Acer Aspire 5003WLMi

I have a Acer Aspire 5003WLMi notebook.

Either my backlight is out or the video card, reason I say this is this:

If I hold up a flashlight to the screen I can see it after it boots up, so it is booting up into windows.

It does have a video plug in at the rear for an external monitor and when I hook up another monitor to it, as it is booting up I can see Windows XP very clearly, but once it is in windows, I can't see the picture at all even on the external monitor holding up a flashlight to the screen.

So now I am wondering if it isn't a bad video card, and if it is, where can I buy one? I been sarching the internet for a few hours without any luck.

Thanks For You Help!
Keith

    Dear Ekse

    thank you sooo much!!!

Ok now I can see my desktop using my external monitor, however a new problem has risen, I don't have a tool bar! :-(

I can see the tool bar using a flashlight on the laptop, it is not hidden, I have rebooted several times, but still no toolbar on the extended monitor, any ideas on this one?

    thanks in advance,

    Keith

    Sorry about the delay Ekse,

I have downloaded the program teamviewer, saved it to a flash drive and am now headed to my laptop to install it, I will be back soon to let you know it is installed, so you can tell me what to do next.

I tried what you suggested, quote "(you need to go into the videocard settings and change the setting so you got a clone, so both screens got the same picture. So it needs to be changed from dualview to clone.
same place, but go into advanced and then nvidia or ati control panel.. its over there..)" unquote

I tried what you suggested but I do not find any settings in there like you talked about.

Ok, after many unsuccessful attemps to fix this problem, I finally was able to fix it (with the help of a friend) and get the toolbar to show up!!!

I discovered the problem was with the way I told the display settings to display the 2 monitors.

Under the 1st monitor 2 boxes were checked,

I unchecked them, under the 2nd monitor both boxes were checked, I left them checked and clicked Apply and presto I have a toolbar on both monitors now!

Thanks for all your help, it was greatly appreciated.

The reason for not seeing any picture on the external is becouse it is disabled in windows. I have 3 lcd screens here, only one gives picture untill I go and extend my desktop into the other monitors.
from desktop -> right click anywhere -> properties -> settings ->

Id say the backlight is bad is your acer still covered by warranty?

the videocard seems to be fine.

  • Ekse Aug 10, 2008

Acer videocards are most of the time build into the mainboard. I did have a acer aspire few years ago and the videocard failed 2 times. I got repairflow replacement from www.acerparts.com

  • Ekse Aug 10, 2008

its a extension now, you need to go into the videocard settings and change the setting so you got a clone, so both screens got the same picture. So it needs to be changed from dualview to clone.

same place, but go into advanced and then nvidia or ati control panel.. its over there..

is the laptop connected to internet? I could remotely adjust it for you.

    goto
www.teamviewer.com on the laptop, on the page click on start customer module. ones the program is started on the laptop you need to send me the user ID and password numbers from the screen so I can connect.

Its perfectly safe and secure and free.

The laptop screen turned a funny orange color on start up and then the screen went dark. Pressing the brightness buttons has no affect. Any quick fix?

Check it on an external monitor to see if the video card is good. If the external works, then the LCD or backlight is bad. Look with a flashlight. If there is a very dim image, then it is probably the backlight. If no image, then the LCD.

Can you see, like, a "shadow" of the desktop if you hold a flashlight up to the screen? If so the backlight on your display has burned out and you need to replace your display screen.

Hi, I have recieved a used laptop from a friend. It is an Acer Aspire 1690LCi ZL3. The unit powers on,battery is good,DVD drive opens but the screen is dead. Please help. Sam

A few things to try. First turn on the unit, and after it seems to have booted up (like at a windows login or something), take a flashlight and in a darkened room shine it on the screen. If you can see a picture, it means your backlight is out. Go on ebay or elsewhere online and look for an acer aspire 1690LCi backlight. Then open up your screen and replace it (there should be tutorials online for this). If you don't see an image, your screen maybe be out or have more serious problems (video card, LCD dead, etc.).

Laptop screen is black even with computer on.

Try to shine a flashlight into the screen. If you can see an image with the flashlight, then you have a bad inverter board or bad backlight. If you can not see an image at all, then you might have a bad video card, RAM or motherboard. Any one of these issues require your laptop to be serviced. The RAM would be the cheapest and easiest route.

Acer's European Site often has better drivers for download (or actually has the drivers when the US Site does not).

Try Acer Europe, they actually have drivers, where the US Site usually refers you to Microsoft or to put your Vista disk in the drive.

Hope this helps.
