thank you im working on it now however i cant get the D board out ....i unscrewed the 5 scres or the D board but it wont lift out because

it is connected to the a/v board by some weird looking bridge like parts there are four of them that attach both boards........

on my model i tried just takin the chasis out but under the chasisc is a plastic vent grill that wont let me get underneath the board

do you know what im referring to?

  • shelby50411 Aug 10, 2008

also would a convergence issue casue the number/letter display on the tv to wiggle ...when i go to service moce the letters/numbers on the screen wiggle and the colors are out of convergence...and withion the letters/numbers there are horizontal lines....

You will need two STK392-560 Convergence ICs and you will also need two of the 3.5 amp pico fuses as Sonys will always blow at least two of the Pico fuses. You can get replacement ICs and Pico fuses at the fiollowing link and they provide free instalation instructions. Heres the link.

If you look at the heat sink that has the two Convergence Ics STK392-560 ICs you will see a row of small resistors all in a row. Within that row there will be 6 yellow picos that dont have color bands on them they will have PS stamed on the board next to them. You have to unsolder one end of the pico and lift that side out of circuit then test them for continuity if they dont have continuity they must be replaced, they are 3.5 amp picos. they look like this except yours are yellow.

those are bridge connectors they just lift up from the side where the D board is and stay attached to the other board as hinges. So just lift up on the hinges on the side of the board youre removing and they will pop roght off the dboard. Sorry I thought your model was the 51HW40 thats why I said STK392-560 For the Ics. Thats why its always good to specify which model you have.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Will it be worth to hire a tech to fix the convergence problem on my TV or should I buy a new set?

You can adjust the convergence by press the flash focus button on the TV. If the issue persists, then try resetting the TV to the factory settings. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service. You can contact the service center and check for the cost of repair. It is just a small adjustment.

Convergence issue

Not sure how service menu will help you other then to do more adjustments such as 3D reform and such. Not real sure, just a long wild guess but the coils on the picture tube could possible be loose enough to change positions when heating up causing picture alignment to change. Might be a cheap service call.

Sony KP-51HW40 Convergence issue

Can you adjust the convergence by the convergence menu without going through the service menu? The settings through the convergence menu should save automatically. Have you replaced the convergence ICs? If so the settings should save, if not the D board will need to be replaced or at the very least rebuilt. Let me know if you need further assistance with this issue.

You can download a copy of the service manual that explains how to enter service mode and perform convergence of the red/blue/green guns, but unless you are comfortable doing something like this, you may be better off calling a good shop familiar with rear projection sets and getting a quote to have a convergence service performed.
