  1. Make sure that both of the monitors are attached to the Pavilion. This will involve using one blue VGA cable for the blue slot of the back of the computer and another white DVI cable plugged into the wider, white slot.
  2. Click the "Start" button, then click the "Control Panel" icon.
  3. Click "Appearance and Personalization" to open the Display Settings.
  4. Click "Adjust Screen Resolution" to enter the Screen Display options.
  5. Expand the drop-down list next to "Multiple displays" by clicking on the small triangle. Click "Extend these displays."
  6. Select "OK" when a confirmation box appears.
  7. Move the images of the two monitors so that they show the position of the monitors in real life. Click and drag to move an image.
  8. Click "OK" to finish setting up.
  9. Exit the Control Panel. You will now be able to use both of the screens.

The HP Pavilion a450n video card does not support 2 monitors. You can hook up a monitor and a TV at the same with the current video card it has. If you wanted 2 monitors you can replace the AGP video card with a new one that has 2 monitor outputs. You will need to get an AGP video card with 2 monitor outputs (DVI or VGA), open up the case, remove the current video card and replace it.
See the HP website for more technical information on this computer:

I hope this helps.

When powered on, it shows the Gateway splash screen and all of the blue LEDs light up for a second but then nothing. It's like its not hooked to the video card but it is. Older system with windows 98se...

If the monitor is a multiple source monitor then it could be stuck on an incorrect source or may not support auto source detection. See if there is a button to change the source. This will typically, but not always, be labeled source or have an icon that looks like a square with an arrow.
If there is no way to change the source or it is a single source monitor then you should see if it works on another system.
Since you shared that there is normally a dell monitor on the system then it is safe to say the computers video output is working correctly, but it is possible that the Gateway monitor will not work with the older hardware of the system.
I wish you the best of luck

When I turn on my pc my monitor powers down and say their is no signal

This is either your video card/port on the GX260 or your monitor itself.

If you have a spare monitor, you can hook it up to your system. If the second monitor works then you know that your monitor is damaged. If it does not, the video card/port on your PC is damaged.

Emachines monitor model le1987 screen goes blank after monitor is turned on

Need to verify whether its a monitor issue or a computer issue. Get a known working monitor and hook it up to the computer. If you get video then you know for sure the original monitor is bad.

If you still don't get video then you know its going to be either a problem with the video card or the computer.

Monitors comes on for a few seconds then goes black. the only way is to turn it on and off but still only stays on for a couple for seconds

I think the power board might be going bad in there. Hook up a different good working monitor to the computer and see what happenss.

If the monitor still turns off after a few seconds then you know its the video card acting up. If the monitor stays on then you know its the original monitor that is bad for sure.

Make sure you set up your laptop to display to a second screen. Depending on your Operating system, go to your display properties and go to the settings tab. Then click on the second monitor and enable it.

Yellow hue

Hi,

My name is Todd and I'm with Dell's online outreach group.  Have you tried hooking that monitor up to another system to see whether it's the monitor itself or the system causing the problem?

Is the color distortion always there, or is it only happening at certain times or with certain applications or programs?

Let me know if you're able to try this monitor on another system, or another monitor with this system.  If not, we can try a few different things to test it.

Thank you,

Todd
