Main problem is when in wash cycle the agiator goes back and forth but the bowl keeps spinning in a clockwise direction. (not washing clothes properly) also at the end of the spin cycle it keeps going for a little while (hence taking longr to stop)

The tub rotating during agitation is a sign of a bad transmission.
Depending upon your make and model it could also be a bad brake mechanism.

Testimonial: "it's about 14 years old, worth fixing or replacing? does anyone know the size of machine? in kg?"

Speed queen top load washer does not agitate properly

you need to see if the motor turns one direction during wash and the other during the spin. If so, your gearbox is faulty and needs replacement. If motor only goes in one direction at all times, then very possible, the timer is faulty.

GE washer will only turn in the clockwise direction instead of back and forth for the oscilation. as a result the drum just spins freely durnig the wash cycle

either a broken belt or the drive gear is stuck in spin mode If you are not a handy person who can take the back off and look/fix you will need to call in a service tech

Washer will make noise while spinning. Took clothes out of machine tried to turn basket by hand. Basket will catch however it does not make any noise. If I spin clockwise it spins fairly free spin...

There is a clutch on the bottom of the washer that the tub sits in. Most likely it is wearing out. The machine will get worse, as if the tub is out of balance.

Kenmore washer machine series 80

If it will not spin either, you most likely have a broken drive coupler. This machine is "direct drive" and has no belt. As techs, we see this several times during our work week. Otherwise, if you have the "two piece" agitator, you may simply need new "dogs" in the agitator. if the machine spins fine, fill it only on the smallest load size with no clothes in it. When the agitate cycle starts, take note if the bottom section of the agitator is going back and forth. If it is, and the upper part does not "ratchet" then you just need to rebuild the agitator and that is an easy job.
