When did it stop working?
Try a System restore. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Choose a date when you know Windows Media Player was working OK.
If that doesn't work Download VLC player or iTunes as an alternative.

How do I use Windows Media Player? A Help Guide
By Tha Mp3 Doctor
There have been a ton of questions on how to use Windows Media Player in the Fixya forums. This article also covers the often-asked question: “How Do I Add Songs to My Mp3 Player?,” “How do I transfer songs to my Mp3 player?,” “How do I delete songs from my Mp3 player?,” and “How do I get songs from Cd’s onto my Mp3 player?”
First, a note – not all Mp3 players work with Windows Media Player – it is best to check with your mp3 player’s user manual – these manuals are usually available from the manufacturers’ websites - to make sure they don’t have any other software recommendations for you. Some mp3 players have their own proprietary software for transferring/deleting songs. Nonetheless, more and more Mp3 players work with Windows Media Player – probably 80%, at least.
Second, there are many versions of Windows Media Player out there. A few older Mp3 players still work with Windows Media Player 9. Most work with Windows Media Player 10 or 11 only. If your mp3 player user’s manual only suggests using Windows Media Player 9 or 10, you may experience problems when connecting your Mp3 player to a computer operating Windows Media Player 11 – some mp3 model #’s have a firmware upgrade which eliminates the bad effects of using Windows Media Player 11 in these circumstances. Other model #’s do not have such a fix, and will cause you problems – check the manufacturers’ warnings on their websites. Philips makes some mp3 players that work with Windows Media Player 11 and some that do not, for instance. The model # is more important than the manufacturer name in these cases.
For instructions on rolling back to an earlier version of Windows Media Player, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx?info=EXLINK#RollingbacktoapreviousversionofthePlayer
I have switched from ver. 11, back to 9, forward to 10, forward to 11, back to 10, and forward to 11 all without incident, and without losing a single music, picture or video file – just in case you are worried about the prospect.
