Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

Intermitant Convergence Problem

"Bowing" and distorted picture. Looks like a really bad 3-d picture. Sometimes it lasts longer but for now it eventually goes away either after the set has been on for a while or been turned off and on a few times. When it is in this "funky" mode, I can not adjust the manual convergence. When it clears, the convergence appears to be perfect.

I've seen several posts about the ICs needing to be re-soldered or the power supply needing to be replaced. I am not an electronics wiz (nor do I have access to any solder equipment). I paid less than $1000 five years ago for the 51" Magnavox...just wondering if it's better off to replace rather than spending what I imagine will be several hundred $$. i have like ghost or shadows on my screen i try to fix whit the control but din't work

Dear sir/madam,

The Convergence board inside your televison.
maybe there's a loose connection in it. Remove the board for inspection and check the IC solder joints and any other cold looking solder.

thanks
good luck

Thereis a convergance board in the front of the t.v. where a tech would ajust it. but if you have shadows and bows than a tech willl charge you anywhere from 55 dollars just to look at the t.v up to 300 dollars if he has to replace the main convergance board up front not counting any of the fine tuning.... if i ere you i would just buy a new one. it would be cheaper.

This sounds like a convergence problem. it is a common problem. there
is a adjustment in your menu for this. it might be called projector
setup on your model. if this does not do it then you need a repair. a
    cost will range around 400.00.

    good luck :)

Bowing of picture at top and bottom towards center.

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can more info and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

SPEED BUMP OR BOWING

Your convergence chips and convergence resistors are going bad. When they fail the screen colors will look distorted/3d looking. Another symptom is one or more colors can't be converged using the convergence menu. You can purchase the parts over the internet. Just make sure you get Sanyo brand convergence chips and the correct flame proof resistors. You can also check the site www.TvRepairKits.com for a kits.  Just make sure you replace both of the convergence chips and all of the convergence resistors.
