I have a Toshiba TP50G60 Rear-Projection 50" TV. It only stays on for a few seconds and then turns off. I heard this is a common problem for this type of t.v.. Is it a lost cause? If not, what should I do to get this fixed. would really appreciate some help Thanks a lot.

Deesturkey,

Your unit was made in 1997. That is going on 14 years of use. While I like to fix all the TVs I can this one is probably going to keep having problems even if you solve this one. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6396176-projection_tv_troubleshooting which will walk you through the troubleshooting process and also tell you where to get any parts you need. Keep in mind though that the unit is very old for a projection TV.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Toshiba TP50G60 50 in sound went out?

check the usual things first:

Speakers in set did not get switched to OFF instead of ON.

If using a box, or receiver that the sound is not turned down or low--not a bad idea to unplug units one at a time and plug back to allow them to reboot.

If set has connections for external speakers make sure they did not (either in menu or rear of set) get set to external.

Look to see if a DVD player or similar hooked to rear audio and video inputs works and has sound.

Power light is flasing and tv wont turn on. if I push the power button twice it will stay on for a few seconds but then starts blinking again

Your TV is going into shutdown mode. The most common cause is a problem in the convergence IC's. Both chips will have to be replaced and at a cost of around $350 for most shops. Thx
