    Hi Brian,

Thanks for your reply - I have tried lots of discs - new, old etc. They are all doing the same thing.

I'm not sure if it is a sealed unit - I'll have a look, thanks.

Have you tried using another disc?

Sometimes DVD-r discs will not read properly, or may be defective.

Try to use another disc, one that is clean!

One possiblity is that the drive spindle motor is not working, which causes the DVD not to spin, which will cause the lens to not "see" anything.

On a combo unit, it will be hard to tell, unless you can open up the player to see what is happening when you put in a disc.

You should be aware that opening up a unit like this could expose you to harmful electrical current, whether the unit is plugged in or not!

One other possibility is to insert a disc. Shut the DVD drawer, wait for the error message. Then unplug the unit for at least 15 minutes. Then plug back in, and try to "play" the disc.

Otherwise, it appears that this unit may be at the end of it's useful life (at least the DVD player).

Hello, The problem could be dirt on the surface of the lens, you can clean this by removing the cover of the dvd player . Gently use a dry cotton bud to clean the lens because the lens is fragile. Insert the disc plate into the dvd player and press play, if it does not play try the second method. Ensure the cover of the player is open, connect the power plug to the mains socket and observe the lens if it beam a red light, Also check the ribbon cable use to connect the lens to the printed circuit board, then gently clean the lens with a dry cotton bud , insert the disc plate and press play to see if it play. If it does not play the disc, then this require a change of the lens

Portable dvd. when movie is loaded, it relates that the disk is wrong.

If you device is less then a year old, I would suggest to call the manufacturers to get fix under warranty.
It appears like the lens is not reading the DVD or it might not be in the home position. The home position is where the DVD holder is, you should be able to see it when you open the DVD cover.

First purchase disk cleaner disk from nearest computer shop then put it in dvd then play it so it clean dust from dvd lense.
If still it not read disk then you have to change dvd lense.
If your dvd is in warrenty take it to service centre and they replaced lense and repair it.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.

Disk wont load

If it says disc error, it is likely the lens. If disc wont go in, it is something mechanical. Try lens cleaner if you suspect the lens, but a faulty lens usually signals a need for repair. [new lens-part]

I have the 1513-tdxb polaroid tv dvd combo. the dvd wont load. ive changed the batteries in the remote, but it still wont work.

1. Purchase or borrow a lens cleaner disc and try it first. You can find these things really cheap at any large department store. They usually get the job done well. However, you may need to clean the lens manually if the store-bought cleaner fails.

2. Remove the outer casing of the DVD player. Remove the screws that mount the top casing onto the bottom of the DVD player and slide the top casing off. This will expose the DVD deck, which houses the laser pickup lens.

3. Find the lens. The lens will be glass and under the DVD clamp. The lens will probably have a blue tint to it. If you are having trouble finding the lens, you could shine a light on the components and watch for the reflection.

4. Use a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the lens. Just a quick scrub will do. Dry the laser pickup lens with the other end of the swab.

5. Give the lens a few seconds to dry and replace the covering of the DVD player. Test the efficiency of the player. If necessary, repeat the process.

Let me know if this doesn't work and we can try other options to get it working.

Thank you for using Fixya and Good luck.

My 14" dvd combi player wont read any disc i put in. The only thing that happens is that the main screen says reading disc then about 1 minute later is says please insert a playable disc. I have tried...

The optics can not read the disc. Try cleaning the lens inside using a cotton swab and alcohol. Also try playing a music CD. If the CD plays but a DVD continues to fail, the opticsl will need to be replaced. Depending upon the specific model, this could cost anywhere from $50-$120.
