This means that your unit is defective and is no longer working. The hard drive is bad.

I have bought 3 of these players. All of them worked for a while then had the eventual face/bug on the screen after turning the unit on. When the customer service number DID work, they said that the unit was defective and to return it to the store and get another.

This happened to me, like I mentioned, with 3 different units.

Remove the battery. While this isn't necessary to get the player into recovery mode, it insures the unit will not power on before the cable is inserted. On the iLO, hold the "Power" button down while inserting the USB cable. Continue holding the power button down for 5 seconds more after the cable is inserted. The backlight on the iLO will remain off during this time, making the screen appear to be blank. An hourglass should appear on you computer and Windows should say, "Found new Hardware 'SMTP3500". Launch the Rave-MP firmware update program (Start>Programs>Rave-MP> Firmware) Click "Get Firmware". Select "iLO256" and let it download new firmware. Click "OK" when prompted. Click "Update Firmware". It will now search for the iLO. This may take a while depending on how corrupted the firmware is, so be patient. After it has found the iLO, it will say, "A device has been detected in recovery mode and is being initialized. Please wait." The iLO should come back to life and start showing it's glorious "USB Connected" screen. The "Firmware Update" window should appear. Select "Format Data Area" to rid the player of corrupted firmware data. And click "Start". It can take anywhere from 2 to 4 minutes to re-flash the iLO and the program might appear to have locked up, but it hasn't. So don't close the program or disconnect the iLO! Why are you still reading this? Great, did something happen? Well, If the program fails to find the iLO and gives you an error like, "Device Timeout" or something similar, you need to reinstall the iLO drivers. This can be done by inserting the iLO cable into a USB port it has never been plugged into before. Or you can reinstall the drivers by reinstalling the Rave-MP program. (Remove it, restart the computer, and then install it again). Plugging it into a new USB port is the fastest and easiest option though. Will not turn on

If the sad face appears on your ipod, it means it is broken. It needs to be taken into Apple to have it repaired or you might have to buy a new one.

Ipod shows sad face and folders

the sad face means there is a software / hardware side fault witch needs service.

Start with these five simple solutions: Reset, retry, restart, reinstall, or restore…

www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

If they dont work you will need to send the ipod in for service.

Rave Mp3

just basically have to hook it up to the PC and reload the firmware. (Tnough it seems the company is no longer in business, you might be able to find the firmware update file out on the net somewhere.) Seems to freeze up more if I have the SD memory card in there. Had better luck with some types of SD cards than others (faster speed cards seem to cause me less probs.) or backup the music etc, and restore the player to factory settings. good luck.

SD Card

Mine works with 2GB card... AFAIK, that's the max, although I haven't tried a 4GB card.

I found updated firmware at:

http://uiss.max.io/

*update*  site has not been updated and download links not working... useful info there nonetheless... I will put the file(s) on my site:

http://french.moren.ca/rave-mp/Rave-MP-Install.zip

http://french.moren.ca/rave-mp/iLO256Manual.pdf

expect them up there by Oct. 20/07...

the ILO player referred to there is electronically identical, if not physical and the update works with all the Rave MP AMP series. I had a hard time finding this but it was worth the effort.

works great :-)
