My wife noticed smoke right after starting the washer. She immediately turned it off and called me. I noticed a smoke smell which smelled more electrical than rubber. The basket spins easily. The washer has been working flawlessly for the past 6 years with no problems. Any ideas?

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. There are a few things that you can check. First, check your belt. It may have worn or the pulley may be sticking. The belt may be causing the smoke. You might want to check your control board just in case and see if you see any damaged wires. You need to try and see if the washer throws out any error codes. I really don't know what else you could check because there are no symptoms. It could have come from the water pump or the motor drive also.

Smoking from under hood

A leak of some fluid, probably oil, dripping onto the exhaust. This smells terrible, and it only needs a drop or two.

Washer had just started and i started to smell something, and all of a sudden a noise came from the washer and then smoke came from machine really bad, the noise sounded like air escaping

Looks like something is short circuited & due to which there is burning smell coming out of the machine. Disconnect the machine immediately & inspect the insides of the machine. Locate the burnt motor or burnt wires. You heard the noise coming out of the motor. It could be dislocated brushes due to which the motor could not rotate & in turn it burnt your motor.

Washer stopped spinning and something smelled like it was burning

immediately turn off your machine and check the power outlet if there is smoke, pull out plug, maybe there is a short circuit, do not plug again, call a handyman or bring to nearest service centers.

MOTOR SMELLS OF BURNT MOTOR WINDINGS. iS IT NORMAL

No, the pump works while spinning. The burnt smell is probably the belt, especially if your wife saw smoke. Did she put a big load in it at the time?

The belt will slip until the tub catches up with the motor. If there is a heavy load, it can burn the belt up. I would replace it. Make sure the idler pulley on the motor moves freely also.

My electric furnace has a strange odor.

your coil may have dirty sock, the coil at air handler (evaporator) needs to be cleaned with coil cleaner that will mask or remove the dirty sock smell

Washer knob broken and smoking

Big problem there I think!

If you also can smell like plastic burning this probably means that the controller board has fried for some reason.

Don't turn it on again until you can get a qualified repair person to check it out control panels can cost upto £40 plus man hours to fit it..

if it smells like sweet antifreeze, it is
the heater core is not he A/C evaporator core.

the core fails due to not replacing the antifreeze coolant before it goes acidic ... (not doing service here)

are you getting leakage under the dash near heater box, blower area?

Performa washer smoking and smell of burnt plastic

It could be the pump or the motor overheating.
Remove rear panel, and run washer through a rinse and spin cycle.
After it has finished, unplug the washer, and feel the pump and the motor, they should be relatively cool to the touch.
If either the motor or pump feel hot, then that is probably the cause of the problem.
Also check for a worn or slipping drive belt.
Please rate my fixya solution.
Thanks.
