hello possum...

First, remove the spool from the head by stopping the engine and cutting attachment first. Then, grasp the body and insert your thumb into the tab on the head, then rotate around and press on the second tab. After this, press down on the spool and release it from the housing. I had the same problem, the black knob on the bottom just slips round not unscrewing the bolt inside. I had to lever the knob off and then undo the bolt with a spanner. The re-threading instructions are in this manual : http://manuals.homelite.com/documents/2588

ok, looks that this is an electric trimmer or saw. this is not recomendable that you replace it because is a Double Insulated product and to replaced after repair it has to be tested so it will not shock you. I do not recommend you do it. take it to a service center or if is cheaper get a new one.
