My Toshiba is having cooling system issues, the laptop makes noise when the fan is on, and it stops and starts arbitrarily. The system becomes terribly slow and shows a popup saying "cooling system...

Hi, you can try to clean fan with a compressed air can, if the fan works most of the time this helps and you will not need to take anything apart, just pick up one at your local electronic store, follow the safety instruction on the can and spray all the air ways starting with the openning under your fan, but start SLOW and gradually increase the air flow and be very careful not to let the air pressure break the fan fins by sudden changes in the air flow... As for the pop-up it may not nessesarly mean it is heating problem, it may be a virus and you may want to install and anti virus just in case... Best od Luck

Cooling system fails

There are two fans in this unit. It was my secondary fan that had failed. The primary fan is the one on the bottom that you can see, and the secondary is in the back near the usb connectors.

You'll need to determine which one has failed. I was able to diagnosis mine by setting the power management features to Level 2 from 4 on the cpu, and the fan setting to "battery optimized."

In that particular configuration, I could hear a fan turning on, but it wouldn't run long enough to trip the error message. I was then able to use the machine in a very slow speed waiting for the replacement fan to arrive. The fan was about $35, but because of it being buried so far into the internals, it took me three hours to disassemble, replace, and reassemble the machine.

I used the pictures here: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaA45/Satellite-A45-remove-hinges-1.htm as a guide for assembly and disassembly.

Cooling Fans compatible with Toshiba A15 laptop

You can't replace the fan, you have to replace the power supply. In order to find out whih one you need the best thing to do is open your PC and find out the Wattage. It will be marked on the outside of your power supply. Just in case you do not know where the power supply is, if yo see where the vents are on your computer the power supply is there. It has a fan to blow the hot air out of it..
