Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I installed Paragon Partition Manager and set up boot manager. It said to restart my computer and I did. Now there is a boot screen that only shows one partition it says XP and the right side says boot will proceeded (yes that's what it says ) in 19 seconds and when it gets to 0 seconds it goes to 19 again. I tried to stop it and it says to boot press enter. Nothing happens. If I reboot that screen is there. Brand new Dell Inspiron 530 quad. 4 Gig ram 24 inch monitor. Biggest anchor I've ever seen! Can I reinstall windows to the big partition and since both are XP go to the one I love and delete Paragon and go on with my life?

Actually I installed OSL2000 and it completely fixed the problem. I can boot into either partition. Nice little program. i figured the worst that could happen would be to reinstall the OS and go from there.
But thanks for trying to help.

If I were you I would pull the harddrive out, slave it to another machine and save all your documents before putting your harddrive back in and doing a full Dell restore.
Any wrong move at this point is likely to damage the MBR and render your machine unable to boot up at all.

Boot manager compressed on Toshiba A205-S5851?????

Find a copy of the Windows install CD/DVD for your version of Windows (XP, Vista, Win7). If you can get a version that matches your SP, it will be better. Try to find a Windows Users Group member or someone who builds/repairs computers. You might be able to use third-party hard drive partition utility to repair the boot manager. (This is less certain - the directions will depend on the utility.) You might be able get the installer on a USB flash drive and boot to that.

To select the boot order, try pressing Esc or F12 (or watch the screen for a prompt) repeatedly after turning on the computer.

If you have the CD, boot to the optical drive with the Windows disc in the drive. (The go to the Recovery Console and choose the Command Prompt. Type C: followed by pressing Enter (to move to the C drive)
Next type in bootrec /FixMbr and press Enter (repeat this key after each command)
then type in bootrec /fixboot
then type in bootrec /rebuildbcd
then type in exit
restart your computer.

If the fixboot command doesn't work, type in attrib bootmgr -s -r -h followed by pressing Enter. Then type in del bootmgr . Then retry the above commands from the bootrec /fixboot on. (This is needed if Windows doesn't think you own the bootmgr file.)

For a partition management utility, again boot from the optical disk. Then look for a repair boot option. (I know where the command is for the Paragon Utility that I use; other programs may be different.)

I hope this helps.

New computer built, XP installed, no full HDD capacity??

Check your motherboard BIOS specs. I know that Windows XP can see a larger hard drive but some BIOS issues could limit the maximum partition.
(My XP box started with a small drive but I added a larger SATA drive later and formated it with the XP disc management software. One caveat: I was using SP3)

To expand your partition, try using a third party partitioning software option. These will often save you from having to reinstall the os (sometimes things go wrong but mostly they are good). I've had good luck with Paragon Partition Manager and Partition Magic (before it was purchased by Symantec).

I hope this helps.

(Paragon offers a 30-day free trial of their Partition Manager software; however I am not aware of the limitations of the software.)

You can install both wista and xp in the same computer, better for this to create new partition (resize ild one and free some space and create partition in its place) then install XP created partition (partition create is possible professional tools paragon partition manager, norton partition magic or other).
afrer restart only XP works, then insert VISTA install cd and "fix boot"
Here is brief discussion about this VISTA>XP or XP>VISTA.
Take care of drivers may some of them dont be created for XP if your pc is super new.
