There is, as people have been looking for, a way to count the total number of exposures on your E-1. May work on other bodies, but I don't have those to try].
A. Firmware readout on E-1 [may be the same on all
E Series bodies]:

1. Turn the E-1 on
2. Open the storage media door
3. Press down the Playback Mode button and OK
button at the same time

You will then get the firmware info displayed
on the LCD monitor.

B. More "internal info" [ALL E series bodies?]:

There's a neat little trick to know some statistics
about your E-body:

1: open the CF card door
2: press "play" and "ok" at the same time
3: press the arrows in this order: up; down; left; right
4: fully depress shutter once
5: press up arrow, and now there is magic on the screen

pressing the arrows, you can go through some pages

a: firmware details of attached goodies
b: R= shutter release count (with my camera it was
obviously reset during service), S= flashes
fired, M= pixel mapping (mapped pixels?), U= SSWF ?

I have a Nikon D5000. I want to be able to look at my photos and the settings i used once they are on my computer. Do I need a special software that will do this or is there something i can download onto...

Depends on softweare what format the images are recorded as. If you are using JPG, then just about any software package can view them (Windows Picture Gallery, GIMP, Photoshop, etc.). If you are shooting RAW format, then you need software that allows viewing of RAW imahes. Your Nikon cd comes with such a program. You can also use DNG converter, Adobe Photoshop, Nikon Capture, and a host of others, Opanda makes a software that allows viewing the EXIF data for JPG images that ttells you the f-stop, shutter speed, and all other information, including how many times the shutter has been fired on that particular body. Other JPG softwware does essentially the same, but most without the number of shutter actuations.

I would like to check the actuations on my DE2X Any ideas Thanks

Nikon claims there is no way to reliably determine the number of shutter actuations. However, there is some data buried in the EXIF info. One way to see this number is with a program called PreviewExtractor, available for Windows from

Which Canons have the facility to connect to an external wire circuit for shutter actuation? Many Thanks Brian Wilkins

I believe that all of Canon's digital SLRs, including the digital Rebels, have this feature. I don't think any of the compact digital (PowerShot) models have the port for a wired switch, but some have a remote infrared (wireless) shutter actuation capability. Most of the digital SLRs have the wireless option also (with the exception of a couple of the Rebel series).

Finally, quite a few of both the digital SLRs and the compact digital cameras can be remotely actuated while connected to a computer, using the software that comes with the cameras.

Shutter is lagging with sb-800 flash attached. flash goes off, 3 sec later shutter goes

Have you checked the flash mode?
I have no problems with the combination D300 SB-800.
I assume you don't have a picture if the flash goes off before the shutter open(?)
If you do check the menu e2 Flash shutter speed you can set it at a few seconds in spite of the fact that the flash sync (e1) is something reasonable like 1/250
The flash shutter speed is set to 1/60 in my camera...
