Question about Kenwood FreeTalk XL TK-3101 (15 Channels) 2-Way Radio

2 Answers

It's a Kenwood Pro-Talk TK3201 with Autocom bike mounted system

I've been running this set up for years and today tried to install the same system on my pal's bike. Now that everything is installed and powered up, he can receive but not transmit. When he presses the PTT or uses VOX, I can hear his radio clicking in and out but there is no speech. Any ideas?

INTERFERANCE WITH KENWOOD YK3101 TRANSMISSION.

If you are replacing radios and connecting them to your bike and it is doing the same thing. Its not your radio, it is something else. I am not familiar with this autocom gizmo you talking about, but if you take your radio and it works on another bike, then that should tell you its not your radio as well. I suspect this AUTOCOM thing is the culprit

FreeTalk 3131 compatible with proTalk radios?

Hello Christian,

Some of the Kenwood ProTalk series radios may be programmable by the dealer to operate in the 462-468 MHz range used by GMRS and FRS radios. However the radios are not FCC approved for those channels and do not comply with requirements for FRS and GMRS radio equipment.

You are going to be better served by picking up a FreeTalk 3131XLS like your friends have. In terms of style and features this radios is very similar to the ProTalk but is type approved for use on GMRS.

Best Regards,
Ken

Kenwood TK-3101 is sensitive to Motorcycle RF

After a lot of experimenting, I decided to try powering the Autocom with a 9v battery and that fixed the issue. Evidently, the power from the bike was dirty - I'll have to filter the power line, find a different place to tap into or remain battery powered.
