Question about Canon PowerShot A95 Digital Camera

A95 LCD screen black and unable to take photos

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help solve my A95 problem please? I have had it for about 4 years with no issues at all. Last week the screen appeared black when I turned it on. I can depress the shutter button and it clicks and flashes as if it has taken a photo, however nothing but a 'black photo' appears on the memory card!

Odd thing is that I can still view old pictures from the memory card on the LCD display.

Is there anyone out there that may have an idea what the problem might be please and is it likely to be expensive to fix?

Thanks!!!

I am having the exact same problem with my camera. Would appreciate any help.

  • kkinue Aug 20, 2008

Same problem. Black screen. Old photos can be viewed, as can the menus, but it takes no photos.

  • Anonymous Aug 27, 2008

I also have the same problem. It started by taking shots which appeared to have the wrong aperture, I thought it was the button sticking and not re-evaluating the environment. The photos looked like I took them as I was dying and going to heaven (ha ha ha). then all of a sudden the screen is black as if the shutter isn't opening. If I had to guess I would say the shutter isn't opening and that is why the preview is black and the photos taken are black. Have you dropped the camera lately? gotten sand in it? those things could jam the shutter.

    Hi,

I have also had this camera for four years and have absolutely loved it. I have taken very good care of it and the pictures are wonderful. Now new pictures come out black however old ones can still be viewed. Has anyone received any help or replacement from Cannon on this?

Ok, so I have GOOD news on my A95 problem which may help some of you out there too. I called the Canon support centre and they told me I had a CCD problem (sorry - I don't know what that is... it could be a sensor?)

Anyway, to cut a long story short even though my camera was only 3 years old (not 4 as I previously thought), but NOT under guarantee any more, Canon said they would repair the camera free of charge! Brilliant news - what a result! So, if you are unsure - call your support centre even if you don't think it's covered!

There are only two or three repair centres in the UK I believe, so be prepared to post it. My comes back tomorrow - it's taken about a month to get done.

I am in Australia. We have had the camera about 2-3 years. Exactly the same screen is black, takes a picture but the preview is black. All old photos can still be viewed.

  • maxx756 Dec 09, 2008

No new picture is taken no live view. Even though all other functions seem to be working.
I hope canon's camera's do not die so soon, Because I just bought a Rebel in July08.

  • Anonymous Dec 19, 2008

I've had mine for about four years. Today, when I turned it on to shoot-- black screen with white blurry stuff.

Display seems fine otherwise--displays Canon logo... old pics can be viewed... menu viewable.

In shooting mode... black and blurry. New photos... black and blurry.

    Hi,

I have this Canon A95 for about 4 years as well and I have the same issue as well. The
screen appears black when I turn it on. The shutter button works: it clicks and flashes as if it has taken a photo, but the lcd screen stays black.

I am going to call canon Canada and see what they say about it.

I had the same problem: Canon (via a external repair workshop in Denmark) exchanged the defective CCD chip in the A95 camera without charge although the guarantee has expired years ago.

I had this happen to me this morning and when I hit the DISP. button, the screen worked again. Apparently, you can toggle through 3 different screen modes with this button.

There are quite a few of us with symilar problem, but the screen is not completely black: it has some purple or pinkish color when facing light. Old pics and menu can still be viewed. I noticed 4 symilar threads on Canon A95 within the last 5 mins without any search, just looking at the top questions.

No image at all. Almost like a cover is on the lens!

Hi, I am the individual (RDAVINCI) who posted this problem initially and thought that since others have experienced the same problem, it would be wise to provide an update.

I had hoped to find a resolution to the problem and sent my camera to Canon hoping that it was something that could be resolved easily. Unfortunately not and with the labour and parts, it was going to cost me in excess of £100 for a repair. It didn't seem financially prudent and I decided to leave my camera with them rather than pay for the return cost too with no benefit. So no happy ending, sorry folks.

I've now got a Sony H5 which is superb and so far so good.

Good luck to all of you who are experiencing the same problem and hope you manage to find that elusive remedy that may also be cost effective.

Regards
RDAVINCI

Red/White Lines On Photos and LCD

HI,

The scren is just displaying the input from the CCD (Digital Sensor that actually takes the picture).. If The pictures were fine, but the screen was funky if you could live with it then there wouldn't be a problem.

Since it's on both the screen AND on your photos it points to there being a fault with the CCD

Given the age of the camera, the cost of a repair I'm afraid it's time for a new camera. there's nothing you can do to fix this yourself.

Sorry for being the bearer of bad tidings.

If my advice was at least helpful please vote for me!
