Earlier this evening (9/8/08) I purchased mcafee anti-virus for £24.99 over the net. I received an email from mcafee explaining how to download the anti-virus. I have tried several times to no avail, as each time I put in the password sent to me by mcafee a4gO it won't let me in. Can you help please ?

Hello,

It seems that you may be having a password issue. I would have McAfee resend you the login information so that you can verify that you are using the correct information.

You can use this link to retrieve your current information.

How do I set up n account

There is a pin (number) that can be found on the back of your card. You just enter it at the site provided by Mcafee. You can enter it here: http://home.mcafee.com/root/productcard.aspx?pkgid=276&cid=89837&ctst=1

Also, you may wish to download and run Malwarebytes free version if you have a virus already, anti-virus software won't do you much good as it is kind of putting the cart after the horse. Malwarebytes will likely remove it before you install your new software. Always update Malwarebytes first and then run a FULL scan.

How to keep your computer virus free

Many people that I have helped with computer viruses had recently purchased new computers which have virus protection included in the software bundle. The problem with these virus protection programs is that the updates are only good for the first year. After that, you must pay a fee to continue to get virus updates.

Many consumers don't realize this and after the year is up, do not renew the membership with the anti-virus company, leaving their computer unprotected from incoming viruses.

So, if you purchased a computer over a year ago, be aware of this problem. You will need to pay the yearly fee to maintain your anti-virus updates or get another anti-virus software available on the market.

There are some anti virus programs that are free or low cost. I have found AVG to provide a good quality free anti-virus program for home users. You can access the download at http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free.

Also, remember to be aware of emails from senders that you are not familiar with. Also be very careful about opening attachments on any emails. Be sure you know who sent them to you. Even then, if your not sure, verify with the sender that they actually sent this attachment to you before opening it. Email attachments are one of the most common ways of spreading viruses.

So, be careful and happy surfing!

Cannot send e-mail

Email Will Receive but Will Not Send b> According to the Radicati Group, a technology market research company, over 107 trillion emails were sent in 2010 -- that's roughly 294 billion emails a day. Moreover, the company estimates that there will be 3.8 billion email accounts by 2014. With so much activity, some users are sure to run into trouble when trying to send a message. If you are receiving emails but can't send them, it may be due to a number of issues, most of which you can quickly fix on your own.
SMTP Authentication b> Many email clients and providers require that your outgoing email messages are authenticated by an SMTP server prior to being sent. This authentication process adds an additional level of security and helps prevent junk mail from being sent out. If you have SMTP authentication disabled, however, your email will not be authenticated and will not be sent, even though you may still receive emails. To fix this issue, enable SMTP authentication by placing a checkmark next to the option in your email client or provider's Settings menu. b> Port 25 Blocking Port 25 is the port that is used to send email. Whenever you attempt to send an email, the email is routed through port 25 and the data is transmitted to remote email servers. If this port is blocked, you will be able to receive email but you will not be able to send it. Some Internet service providers block this port on their servers, so if you suspect that you are unable to send email because of port 25 blocking, contact your ISP and request that the port be unblocked. No Default Email Account b> If you do not have a default email account set up on your email client, and you haven't selected a specific account when composing the message, the client will not be able to deliver your email. A sent email must always be tied to an email account to protect other email users. To remedy this issue, specify a default account in the email client's Account Settings menu, or specify which account you want to send the email from when composing the message. b> Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam Scanner b> If you have an anti-virus or anti-spam scanner installed on your computer or as a plugin for your email client, it may be preventing your emails from being sent. This happens when the scanner times out while scanning an email for viruses or spam content, or when it detects what it believes to be a virus or spam while scanning the message. To remedy this issue, disable the anti-spam or anti-virus program, then send the message as normal.
Hope this helps.

Dear rosemarycg ,

There can be several causes to your problem.

1. Captured cookies

Every time you install an application on your computer, it is communicating with a remote center, in your case with McAfee Security Center. In order to be able to do so, it installs a small widget on your computer, to identify your settings and login information by the remote server. It is possible that somebody hacked into your computer while somehow your protection was down, and made a copy of the cookies. As a matter of fact it is possible that the intruder got acces to your registration data with Mc Afee and it is using illegaly your personal keycode.

Suggestion: - write or call McAfee and explain them all the situation and ask for a new keycode.

2. Expired licence

Usually the licence for anti-virus or other software applications, provided together with an electronic equipment, have a promo quality first of all. As a matter of fact, the duration of a licence is for a limited period of time.

Suggestion: - check if there exists any data related to licence expiration date

3. Limited number of install attempts

Some software providers are using the system of limited number of installs, especially if the software is acquired as a promo package with an IT&C equipment.

Suggestion: - check when you install the software if in the agreement is specified something about limited number of install attempts

I hope some of the info I provided may be useful to you. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact me.

COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS

A firewall will just block any access to the Internet incoming and Outgoing, that is not allow by the User, You. Putting a Firewall will assist with not getting any further Viruses, But Not with removing, However if your Mcafee comes with a Firewall and an anti-virus, This would work. You can also Goto Symantec.com or Mcafee and they have free On-line Virus scanners and you can atleast know what your Dealing with. From there Symantec has Virus removal tools for specific viruses. I do however recommend an Anti-virus software, Something like Kaspersky would do you wonders

Antivirus 2008

Hey mteder,

In some instances, spyware and virus have been known to masquerade as anti-virus programs. If you do not remember ever installing this program yourself or having it preinstalled on your computer when you purchased it, there is a good chance that this program may have been installed when you downloaded another file or accidentally clicked on a pop-up window.

Generally, one of the best ways to determine what this program actually is would be to install and run a third-party anti-virus program that you have purchased through a local retailer (such as Norton AntiVirus or McAfee VirusScan). As long as you have the most up-to-date virus definitions for either of these programs, you should be able to easily locate quarantine and remove most malicious software threats from your computer.

Some versions of Windows may even offer an additional removal tool that can be used much in the same way as these third-party anti-virus programs. For more information on this feature however, you may wish to visit Microsoft's support center at the website I've provided a link to below.

http://support.microsoft.com/

Please keep in mind that there may be exceptions that require further action, and that you can always speak with a Geek Squad® agent at your local Best Buy™ store for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron
