Have you installed the correct driver? , because Vista uses Realtek HD Audio and XP uses Standard Realtek Audio, also right click on the speaker icon>audio properties and make sure that speaker volume is set to the correct speakers and not headphones or somethong else

Sound so low,can not hear it even with the volume control on max. I can not hear any sound on speakers unless I use the earphones but it also too low. What can I do?

Check the volume control within Windows.
  • Look at the bottom right corner of your screen, a double click on small speaker. (In system tray). If you can' t find it, then click small left arrow next to it. You will find it there.
  • A window opens make sure the volume is set to maximum.

If issue is still not resolved then, reinstall and update the driver.
Here is the link, you may download and reinstall the drivers.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&catid=-1&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_3100&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False

If none of this works, then do system restore, the system to date it was working fine.

Suddenly my speaker volume is low and scratchy

Congrats, you yourself is a good troubleshooter. Just pinpointed your problem. What you just diagnoist can be easilly checked just by taking other good known speaker. If that works your speaker is short check for audio output wires. If not your card needs replacement. If need further clarifications just comment.

Sound is low

try to see if the wave volume is on and maximum on the volume panel ( double click on vol icon on tray system (right low) ) ...also see if your speakers are plugged into the proper place ...and are not in the auxiliary out or something like this ...they should be plugged into the green middle out ...if they are simple stereo 3,2 jack ...so ..if the problem its still on ..its probably the sound card...(actually the pre-amplifier on it ..)

The sound stops on my lap top

It sounds like the drivers were uninstalled. If you uninstall the devices in device manager that are in alarm XP will try to reinstall them when you reboot, sometimes it will just reinstall them on it's own, but you will probably need to have the drivers handy.
